Train cancellations in Schleswig-Holstein: Nordbahn construction work until June 20th!
Deutsche Bahn's current construction work on the tracks is causing significant train cancellations on the Nordbahn in Südholstein, up to and including Friday, June 20th. As ndr.de reports, it primarily affects the connections between Hamburg, Elmshorn in the Pinneberg district and Itzehoe as well as Wrist in the Steinburg district. Particularly affected is the RB 61 line, which only stops in Hamburg-Altona between 9:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. and skips the Hamburg-Dammtor and Hamburg-Hauptbahnhof stops.
Passengers who rely on these connections should prepare for alternative transport options. It is therefore possible to use the S-Bahn trains from Hamburg-Altona. There is also a replacement bus service provided by the Nordbahn, which is intended to enable connections between Pinneberg and Hamburg. The timetables for this replacement service can be found on the Nordbahn website - it could be worth taking a look at to optimize your travel planning.
Timetable tips for commuters
Anyone who regularly takes the S-Bahn should be prepared for a few things with these changes. Individual train cancellations on lines RB 61 and RB 71 could also affect your journey. The temporary lack of stops in Hamburg-Dammtor and Hamburg-Hauptbahnhof should be particularly noted here. The emissions from the construction work could also cause one or two time problems.
So if you're planning a trip between Hamburg and Elmshorn or Wrist soon, think carefully about how you can reach your destination. Use the S-Bahn or the alternative buses to avoid unexpected waiting times.
Information from the region
In addition to the construction work in the north, there are also construction sites in other regions that affect train traffic. Since May 28, 2025, trains between Marchegg and Gänserndorf have been running again, but with different departure and arrival times of around 18 to 21 minutes. If you want to travel from Gänserndorf to Vienna, you will find that the departure times have changed. This information can be viewed on the oebb.at website and helps commuters plan their trips accordingly.
So make sure you incorporate the information about the current construction work and its impact on train traffic into your travel planning as best as possible. Even though there are sometimes a lot of traffic jams, we have a good knack for getting things done on time - at least if we are well prepared!
