Bicycle parking spaces in Schleswig-Holstein: One in three is inadequate!

There are currently some exciting developments in Schleswig-Holstein that affect both the local communities and the reality of life for many citizens. Particular attention is being paid to bicycle parking options at train stations, which the ADFC has now taken a closer look at. How NDR reports, the reviews showed that almost every third train station, including the well-known stations in Flensburg, Kiel and Lübeck, scored “inadequate” or “poor”. The ADFC is now calling on municipalities to urgently improve parking options. Cycling is becoming increasingly popular, and with so many citizens dependent on bicycles, there is an urgent need for action.

But it's not just cycling that's a topic of conversation. The Christian Albrechts University in Kiel has decided to revoke the status of the Islamic University Group. This is in connection with anti-Semitic and misogynistic incidents that occurred during Islamic Week in May. Again NDR reported that an investigation could not resolve the allegations, and the university is now considering legal action, including exmatriculations and bans.

The situation of the refugees

Another important topic is the situation of refugees in Schleswig-Holstein. As the State government announced that the number of refugees arriving in the first half of 2025 fell to 3,000, while it was 6,000 in the previous year. This is partly influenced by the dramatic decline in the number of refugees from certain countries of origin, such as Syria, Türkiye and Afghanistan. In October 2023 alone, 2,330 refugees were admitted, 621 of them from Ukraine. Minister Aminata Touré emphasizes the challenging situation caused by international refugee movements.

Currently, half of the capacity in the initial reception centers is full and around 10,000 people are required to leave the country. The state government plans to reduce the number of places in accommodation by the end of 2027, which raises many questions given the ongoing challenges and current overload.

Education and infrastructure

But refugees are not the only issue in Schleswig-Holstein. Things are often tight in the support centers. Many facilities are overloaded and suffer from a lack of space and a shortage of teachers. Around 6,000 children and young people who need special support are enrolled at these centers. The need for further financial support and new concepts is becoming increasingly noticeable in the region.

In addition to the social challenges, there is also good news from the economy: mussel fishermen in the North Sea are expecting a good season. They hope for a harvest of 12 to 13 tons, which will be exported primarily to France and Belgium. Demand is already high there too. In Germany, however, the mussel season only begins in autumn.

New protection for young people

As of today, July 17th, the sale and distribution of nitrous oxide to minors is prohibited. This new regulation from the Ministry of Health is intended to protect young people from possible abuses. A nationwide ban is also being planned to create uniform standards across the country.

In summary, it can be said that Schleswig-Holstein is facing some challenges, but can also record positive developments. It remains to be seen how the various thematic areas will develop in the coming months.
