Latest news: gray seals, new rail connections and more!

What's new in Schleswig-Holstein? On December 4, 2025, a number of exciting events and developments occurred in the region that should interest both residents and visitors.

DB Regio and the coverage of the rail network
An important point in the transport policy landscape is the newly signed contract between Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen and the regional manager of DB Regio Nord. Loud NDR DB Regio will continue to operate on the route between Kiel, Flensburg and Hamburg from 2027. This ensures a reliable connection and strengthens mobility in the region.

Where is the RE7 going? The good news for commuters: The RE7 will now run from Flensburg to Tinglev every two hours. This is a practical improvement for anyone who regularly uses this route.

Nature and environment: gray seals in Friedrichskoog

There is a special reason for joy in Friedrichskoog. How Environmental portal Schleswig-Holstein reported that the first two gray seals that were cared for in a sanctuary have successfully completed their quarantine. They are small animals that were brought to the station on November 16th and are now healthy, with weights of 12.1 kg and 17.7 kg. These small fin carriers are part of the project to monitor and conserve the gray seal population in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea.

Did you know that gray seals only use berths on the outer sands of the Wadden Sea? They live and breed there in the months from November to January, which is documented through regular recordings. An exciting project that shows how important sustainable monitoring of animal populations is!

Finance and infrastructure: banks in transition

Another issue that concerns citizens is the decline in bank branches in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. Loud NDR the number of credit institutions has fallen by 28%. There are now only 72 branches in the region. The reasons for this are advancing digitalization and increasing competition. One example is the Deutsche Bank branch in Lübeck, which was modernized to also offer advice outside of regular opening hours.

The Lübeck-Ratzeburger Allee branch is a contact point for anyone who wants to clarify financial questions. Appointments for personal discussions can be arranged here, including via video and telephone. This flexibility makes it easier to stay on top of finances.

More current developments

In the meantime, there is also worrying news: a gas cylinder explosion in a single-family home in Pinneberg caused damage amounting to 600,000 euros. Fortunately, the residents were largely spared, but the building has become uninhabitable.

Finally, students in Kiel protested to mobilize against the introduction of a new administration fee of 60 euros per semester. The Ministry of Education justifies this measure as necessary to finance administrative services. It remains to be seen how the discussions will develop.

With all the diverse topics, from transport to nature and finance to social movements, Schleswig-Holstein remains a dynamic region with many stories to tell.
