Bakery Hansen Mürwik from Wees files for bankruptcy – what now?
An unpleasant chapter has opened in the regional food industry: The Hansen Mürwik bakery from Wees, which is based in the Schleswig-Flensburg district, has filed for bankruptcy. This decision came after extensive modernization costs and the sharp increase in energy and personnel costs, which the company could no longer bear after the takeover in summer 2024. The application to open insolvency proceedings has already been submitted to the Flensburg District Court, as lebensmittelpraxis reports.
The bakery, which operates eleven branches in the Flensburg area, is not worried about the future for the time being: the provisional insolvency administrator Arno Doebert confirms that operations in all branches and production will continue undisturbed. “The company's operational profitability remains profitable,” says Doebert, who is optimistic about finding a viable solution for the bakery. The wages and salaries of the 145 employees are covered by the pre-financed insolvency money until the end of January 2026, which brings some relief to the tense situation. NDR also reports on the general economic situation, which is not entirely dramatic despite the bankruptcy.
Difficult times for the baked goods industry
While Hansen Mürwik is in the red, the Nissen city bakery from Glücksburg also filed for bankruptcy, which increases concerns about the industry. But René Koch, spokesman for the Flensburg Chamber of Crafts, makes it clear that not all bakeries in the north are affected by difficulties. There are numerous companies in the chamber district that are in a solid economic situation. The district includes the city of Flensburg as well as the districts of Schleswig-Flensburg, Nordfriesland, Rendsburg-Eckernförde and Dithmarschen and is currently home to a total of 83 baking businesses.
If we take a look at the baked goods industry in Germany, statistics from the Federal Statistical Office show that insolvency proceedings in the production of baked goods have increased in recent years. Between 2008 and 2024, the industry will face challenges influenced by rising raw material prices and operational restructuring. The situation is not just a local phenomenon, but reflects a cross-trend struggle that many companies have to face, as can be found on Statista.
Although the situation is currently challenging for Hansen Mürwik, the hope remains that through clever realignment and external support, the bakery will not only survive, but emerge stronger from this crisis. For the employees and shoppers in the region, we can only hope that one of our favorite local supply companies will quickly get back on track.
