Germany defeats Portugal: handball drama unfolds in Herning!
Today was an exciting day for handball fans because the EHF EURO main round has begun! SG Flensburg-Handewitt was able to boast seven players on the field. In the duel against Portugal, Germany got a narrow but deserved 32:30 victory. While the game was in full swing, Johannes Golla scored the first goal of the day. But initially the Germans were challenged in the first 20 minutes because they were behind.
However, the duel quickly turned in Germany's favor, especially when Portugal went around ten minutes without scoring a single goal. Marko Grgić brought Portugal back into the game with the goal to make it 7:8, but Golla countered and scored to make it 10:8. It was always tight in the first half, and so we went into the locker room with the score at 11:11 at halftime. Golla then complained that many technical errors and missed opportunities were responsible for the even first half.
Red cards and decisive moments
In the second half it got really nerve-wracking. The teams' effectiveness increased noticeably, and one of the most exciting moments occurred when Golla received a controversial red card eight minutes before the end. Despite this difficult situation, German goalkeeper Andi Wolff proved to be supportive and received a lot of praise for his performance. However, one thing is certain: Portugal didn't exactly have their best day.
At the same time, the other exciting match between Denmark and France took place, which Denmark won 32:29. Simon Pytlick scored the first goal for Denmark, while Emil Jakobsen scored an important penalty. Despite the French leading at half-time, Denmark was able to turn the tide. Niclas Kirkeløkke made a decisive contribution to this victory, Jakobsen made the fans cheer with a total of 6/3 goals.
Why the main round is important
The main round, which is also of great importance for the other games, begins on Friday in Malmö. On Saturday the German team will face Norway at 8:30 p.m., which the fans in particular are eagerly awaiting. In addition, Slovenia is scheduled to play Sweden at 8:30 p.m., while Denmark plays against Spain on the same day at 6 p.m. These games are crucial for placement in the main round and could decide who ultimately fights for the title.
Last season, SG Flensburg-Handewitt reached the semi-finals of the EHF Men's European League and won both quarter-final games against GOG from Denmark. In the second game, which took place on April 29, 2023 in Plön, Flensburg triumphed with an impressive 35:29. The overall score against GOG was 64 to 55. Lasse Kjær Mø was the top scorer in this success with nine goals.
The memories of last season are still present, and the fans hope that SG Flensburg-Handewitt will have a good hand again this year and will once again be at the forefront in the decisive rounds. It will be interesting to see how the current main round will develop!
