Dragon boat racing returns: Flensburg is expecting thousands of visitors!

On July 12, 2025, the Flensburg Fjord will be the venue for an exciting dragon boat race, organized by the LEO Club Flensburg and the Lions Club Flensburg-Schiffbrücke. After a break of over 10 years, this traditional event is celebrating a warm comeback. The impetus for the revival came from Jan-Erik Schwandt, who, inspired by his father's previous organization, had a good knack for bringing the event back. Even today, several former co-organizers are actively involved, which strengthens the connection to the tradition of the event. Flensburg Journal reports that the city administration is willing to offer support to make the race an unforgettable experience.

Originally, 36 teams were supposed to take part, but after the rapid sell-out of places, this was increased to 52 - which are now also sold out. For a participation fee of 1,200 euros per team, companies have the opportunity to show their sporting ambition in the dragon boat race. The main sponsors, Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse and AZF, ensure that the event runs smoothly and that the surplus flows into local social projects, as the Dragon Boat Race Flensburg emphasizes.

A feast for all senses

The race event will not only inspire with the competitions themselves, but also with a colorful supporting program. From live music with Soko Shanty, followed by “Steff ‘n Roll” and “Scope”, to local food and drink stalls offering treats like beer and coastal soda. This atmosphere turns the race into a true folk festival. The award ceremony, which will take place around 5:30 p.m., will be accompanied by greetings from Mayor Fabian Geyer.

After the best dragon boat teams have been determined, all participants and visitors can look forward to a public and free after-race party. The organizing team is expecting several thousand visitors who want to make the event a great success. There will also be an “open ship” on the tug “Flensburg”, which offers an excellent meeting place for members of LEOs and Lions.
