Drama on the Schlei: kayakers saved from ice -cold water!

A dramatic incident on the Schlei caused excitement on Thursday afternoon. A kayak driver came in mortal danger when he fell out of his boat and he was no longer able to get back on his own. According to Borkener Zeitung the water temperature was not exactly inviting and the situation was still made by strong wind and rough waves tightened.

The wife of the affected man, who was also in kayak, kept her partner afloat, but was unable to make an emergency call. An attentive woman in Haddeby noticed the misfortune and finally chose the emergency number 124124 of the German Society for the Rescue of Schiffbrüchiger (DGZRS), such as Seenotretter reported. The alarmed rescue control center became active in the shortest possible time and sent a sea rescue boat and a rescue helicopter into the water.

rescue at the last minute

About 25 minutes after the emergency call, the sea rescuers reached the site by boat Herwil Götsch. Even if the man was already very cool and his condition critically, the rescuers managed to pull him out of the water and immediately start with first medical care. He was then handed over to the emergency service in the country and taken to the hospital.

The dramatic circumstances of the rescue and the simultaneous support from the emergency services of the volunteer fire brigades Schleswig and Fahrdorf show the enormous commitment of everyone involved. A rescue helicopter was also on site to offer further support in an emergency.

background to hypothermia

The fact that the situation was life -threatening illustrates the fact that water temperatures below 15 degrees significantly increase the risk of hypothermia. In such cases, critical conditions can occur quickly: hypothermic occurs when the body core temperature falls below 35 degrees. In the worst case, at temperatures below 28 degrees, the person concerned is passed out, while the cold tremor - a sign of life - usually occurs at temperatures above 32 degrees. The circumstances that promote further cooling according to cold exposure, such as the "afterdrop", must also be taken into account in the rescue. It is therefore important to immediately bring the data subject to safe environments and to take suitable measures to heat, to prevent worse, such as ckc innsbruck shown.

The present rescue operation from the Schlei reminds us all of how important it is to always exercise caution when it comes to water sports. Such incidents can happen quickly and the right action can save lives.
