Driving training for blind people: Flensburg's brave drivers of tomorrow!

Something is happening in Flensburg, because on Friday, October 31st, a one-off driving training course for blind people will take place. The participants from Flensburg, Damp, Eckernförde, Hamburg and even Stuttgart can test their driving skills in a safe, cordoned off area. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the 23 registered drivers can learn how to steer a car, brake and take turns under the guidance of experienced driving instructors while sitting behind the wheel themselves. But blind people are not allowed to drive in normal traffic, which is why such training is particularly important.

The event is organized by Heiko Thomsen, who is committed to the inclusion and self-confidence of blind people. “It is important that we create opportunities to promote independence in transport,” he says. These driving training courses enable participants to gain important experience and strengthen their self-confidence.

A step towards independence

The idea behind this training is to give blind people an insight into what it is like to drive a car, even if they cannot do it in everyday life. The event offers a unique opportunity to sit behind the wheel and learn the basics of driving through targeted exercises. Safety is the top priority, which is why the training takes place in a controlled environment.

The enthusiasm for the project is evident not only among the participants, but also among the organizers and driving instructors, who are looking forward to supporting the blind drivers in their first steps in the car. “It’s just fun to see how the participants thrive and enjoy driving,” explains a driving instructor who has already taken part in similar events.

A bit of technology for exchange

At a time when social media plays a significant role in the exchange between people, it is impressive to see how such innovative events can create a sense of community. The popular Stories function on Instagram, which has existed since August 2016, could be a great opportunity to share participants' experiences. These stories, consisting of photos and short videos, help capture experiences and share moments with each other, even if they disappear after 24 hours. Such modern communication methods could offer participants a platform to share their experiences with others and perhaps encourage others to join in.

But while the topic of driving training for blind people generates a lot of positive feedback, it remains important to also point out the challenges. Heavy traffic and the complexity of driving require increased attention. Those responsible are aware of this challenge and emphasize how important safety and training are in this area.

At the end of the day, the driving training is intended to enable blind and visually impaired people to be a little more independent and to encourage the courage to explore their own possibilities. Actions like these show that it often only takes a small step to make big changes.
