Flensburg celebrates new promenade: Do we need cycle paths now?

In Flensburg, the new fjord promenade between Nordertorkai and Galwik-Park has opened its doors and is ensuring a lot of activity at the port facilities. After a planning and construction phase that lasted more than ten years and involved enormous costs of over 30 million euros, citizens and tourists can now enjoy around 570 meters of newly designed waterfront promenade. Loud NDR A survey shows that most people in Flensburg are extremely satisfied with the new growth in their city.

However, there are also some suggestions for improvement. While the promenade is primarily reserved for pedestrians, its use by cyclists is being discussed. Many cyclists fear that the route will be officially closed, which is not unusual given the renovation measures that have been carried out so far. Concerns about a possible lockdown grew louder shz also expressed by residents. There is also a lack of rubbish bins, and the first graffiti has made the new promenade's shine somewhat fade.

Design and satisfaction

Particularly noteworthy is the chic design of the promenade, but it is not without its challenges. Despite its size, access to the new promenade is limited to the two end points, as defense companies such as Rheinmetall and FFG are adjacent. A wall protects the businesses from prying eyes from walkers. This fact also means that the Christopher statue, which was unveiled three years ago on the western bank of the harbor, does not receive the attention it would like. It is isolated and is mainly noticed by employees of the surrounding companies.

A look at the construction history of the promenade shows that its construction was made even more difficult by an unexpected subsidence in 2023. At least we are still working on solutions to make the promenade three meters further into the fjord if necessary. These considerations are based on the technical operations center, which favors optimizing access.

The future of port redevelopment

The new fjord promenade is an essential part of the renovation measures in the port area, the legal framework for which has recently changed due to the ruling of the Schleswig Higher Administrative Court. On October 2, 2024, it determined that the statutes formally defining the Hafen-Ost redevelopment area were invalid from the start. The city and the redevelopment agencies are now examining new steps to reorganize the plans in the port area, such as Yoursan reported.

While the citizens enjoy the new promenade, it remains to be seen how the situation around the East Harbor and the integration of the new structures will develop. The next period promises to remain exciting in Flensburg, not only in terms of the redesign of the urban space, but also with regard to the encounter between citizens on the new promenade.
