Flensburg triumphs over Kiel: fifth derby win in a row!
The 6,300 spectators in the sold-out Glücksburg Arena experienced a thrilling handball game when SG Flensburg-Handewitt defeated THW Kiel with 36:34 on October 14, 2025. This victory marked the fifth derby win in a row for the Flensburg team and represents another step towards leading the table. With 14:2 points after the eighth matchday, SG Flensburg takes over the top of the handball Bundesliga, while Kiel, which was previously unbeaten, slips to fourth place with 13:3 points. Eurosport reports that Kiel was unable to win the game after a strong first half (19:16).
In the first half it seemed as if Kiel could stay in control. But Flensburg had other plans and came out of the locker room strong after the break. “We improved significantly in the second half,” emphasized Flensburg goalkeeper Kevin Möller. He became the support of his team and, among other things, saved a seven-meter penalty. Particularly noteworthy is the performance of Lasse Möller, who shone as the best goalscorer with 11 goals, while Elias Ellefsen a Skipagötu achieved the best result with 7 goals for the Kiel team.
The gameplay in detail
The match started quite slowly for Flensburg, while THW took the lead early on. Technical errors by Kiel – as Lukas Zerbe noted after the game – contributed to the weak phase in the first half. Flensburg fought back and used its chances cleverly, suddenly leading 14:12. But thanks to an impressive 3-0 run in the last few minutes, Kiel went into halftime with a narrow lead.
After the break, however, the hosts took control. Flensburg turned the game around and quickly led 24:21. With a strong team performance and Möller between the posts making crucial saves, the pressure of the game knew no bounds. Flensburg finally pulled ahead to 36:30 with five minutes left and secured the important victory. NDR emphasizes how important this victory was for coach Ales Pajovic's team, who, however, emphasizes that the table is not very meaningful at this early stage.
The table position
With this victory, Flensburg has also overtaken THW Kiel, while SC Magdeburg, which won against Bergischer HC with 39:30, remains undefeated in third place with 13:1 points. VfL Gummersbach is in second place with 14:4 points. The coming games promise exciting encounters, and THW Kiel, as defending champions, now has to regroup. Managing director Viktor Szilagyi does not see the standings as crucial in such an important derby, but raises the need for concentration and performance in future games. Sportschau reports on the reactions after the game and the challenges that lie ahead for both teams.
The Flensburg fans can now look forward to an exciting season filled with the warm support of local standards. The next challenge will show whether the SG stays in this form and can continue to fight for the top spot. The handball community is looking forward to the upcoming games.
