Flensburg lost a win at the start of the season – 33:33 against Wetzlar!

An unequal start to the new season! SG Flensburg-Handewitt suffered a setback in their first game of the Handball Bundesliga last weekend. In a thrilling duel against HSG Wetzlar, the two teams drew 33:33. The team from Wetzlar had barely avoided relegation in the previous season and was currently able to take its first points from the SG. The player Emil Jakobsen was a bright spot for Flensburg and scored ten goals. Wetzlar's Philipp Ahouansou was his team's best thrower with eight hits. Things got particularly dramatic four seconds before the end when Niklas Theiß missed a free throw that could have given Wetzlar the win. So it remained the division of points, which is bitter for the Flensburg team before the next game against TVB Stuttgart, which will take place this evening at 8:00 p.m. in the GP JOULE Arena.

The past few weeks have not been without problems for Flensburg. The team that finished fifth last season and won the European League has set itself high goals. But with the new coach Nicolej Krickau, the challenge of reaching the EHF Champions League becomes more difficult. Last season they finished third in the Bundesliga, but failed to qualify for this prestigious league. This season, the North Germans want to leave their stumbling blocks behind them and quickly establish themselves in the top half of the table. Last year, the SG was also able to experience the impressive atmosphere in the Flens Arena as a spectator, which has seen an increase in spectator numbers in recent years.

Chronicle of the SG Flensburg-Handewitt

The history of the club is extremely exciting. Founded in 1990 through the merger of the handball departments of TSB Flensburg and Handewitter SV, the SG has since celebrated numerous successes, including three championships in the Bundesliga and many national and international titles. SG Flensburg-Handewitt had not only experienced highs but also some lows throughout the Bundesliga. Between 2011 and 2017, the team managed to reach seven DHB Cup finals, but unfortunately six of them were lost. The rivalry with THW Kiel, known as the “Northern Derby”, remains a constant highlight for the fans, and the statistics record 42 wins for Flensburg and 67 for Kiel.

The SG is currently also active with various sporting partnerships, which further strengthens the team. The fan community is loyal and combative; the best known among the official fan clubs are “Hell North”, “The Vikings”, “Northern Lights” and “Alte Garde”. This support is invaluable, especially in challenging times like today.

While SG Flensburg-Handewitt has to do their homework from the first game, it remains to be seen how they will fare in the coming games. It is clear that the team has the potential to find itself and give the fans the games they deserve. Stay tuned – it’s sure to be exciting!
