Flensburg's Witzke is out for the entire season with shoulder surgery!
It's not good news for SG Flensburg-Handewitt and their supporters. The 26-year-old backcourt player Luca Witzke will have to sit out the entire 2025/2026 handball season. The reason for this is persistent shoulder problems that have been plaguing him for some time. During a recent joint endoscopy, doctors discovered structural changes that had to be treated surgically. On the pages of the Borken newspaper The dramatic course of his health is addressed directly.
The SG's managing director, Holger Glandorf, expressed concern about Witzke's failure and described the situation as a serious blow for both the player and the team. “We have to prepare to get by without him,” Glandorf said. Having moved from SC DHfK Leipzig to SG Flensburg-Handewitt at the start of the season, Witzke had already raised hopes of a successful season before injury problems slowed him down.
A bitter loss for the national team
But it's not just the club that has to adapt to the changes. Witzke's failure also hits the German national team hard, as he will not be able to take part in the upcoming European Championships in Denmark, which will take place from January 15th to February 1st, 2026. This means that coaches and team planners have to look for alternatives to close the gap that Witzke leaves behind. The Sports1 reports that preparations for the tournament are in full swing, but without Witzke. Glandorf remains optimistic and assures support for Witzke's return to the field.
The risks in handball
The problem surrounding shoulder injuries in handball is not an isolated case. The sport is considered one of the most injury-prone of all. According to an injury prevention study as published in the Journal of Sports Medicine was published, the shoulder joints are particularly affected. They account for between 17 and 51 percent of injuries in handball, and throwing movements at speeds of up to 135 km/h are not uncommon. The study also shows that specific risk factors and preventive measures can help prevent injuries. The backcourt player is particularly at risk.
For Luca Witzke and his team it is now a matter of being patient and focusing on rehabilitation. While everyone involved hopes that he can return to the field soon, SG Flensburg-Handewitt has no choice but to prepare for the challenges ahead without him.
