Large construction project in Flensburg: restrictions until 2028!

There's a lot going on in Flensburg right now: the municipal utilities and the Technology and Construction Center (TBZ) have started construction work along the street Am Katharinenhof. The major project, which is scheduled to run until 2028, includes a comprehensive renovation of the district heating pipes, cables and road surfaces. The plan is to widen the sidewalks and make the bus stops barrier-free so that all citizens can be reached more easily. The first construction phase concerns the section between the Bauer Landstrasse intersection and the Ramsharde school, and this is scheduled to be completed by October 2025.

But be careful, road users! Road traffic is restricted in the affected area: If you come to the intersection of Bauer Landstrasse from the south, it is not passable. However, if you come from the north, you can turn right. Detours are already signposted so that local residents and commuters are well informed.

Construction work on Schleswiger Straße

From October 21st there will be another construction hotspot in Flensburg: the renovation of the district heating pipes on Schleswiger Straße between Tegelbarg and Zur Bleiche is pending. The Flensburg public utilities also have the reins in their hands and are doing everything they can to complete the work by December 31, 2024. A postponement of this construction work is impossible because work is not possible in winter when temperatures are below freezing. The traffic diversion will be unavoidable for residents and road users.

Particularly important for passengers on bus line 14: This will no longer run on Schleswiger Straße from October 21st. Instead, the line will be rerouted via Zur Bleiche and Husumer Straße. Replacement stops will be set up on Husumer Straße (near Tegelbarg) and in Munketoft (near the brewery). The municipal utilities ask for your understanding for the inconvenience and promise that everything will be carried out quickly.

On the way to CO₂ neutrality

The construction work is not only aimed at immediate improvements to the infrastructure, but also part of a larger plan: Flensburg wants to achieve a CO₂-neutral district heating supply by 2035, ten years earlier than legally required. This requires a fundamental change in energy production from fossil fuels to renewable and climate-friendly energy sources. In order for the municipal utilities to achieve these promising goals, infrastructural adjustments are necessary, which include, among other things, the modernization and expansion of the district heating network. These measures are all part of the municipal utility's transformation plan for climate-friendly heat supply.

For anyone who would like to find out more about the current construction projects, the up-to-date information is always available on the Stadtwerke Flensburg website. In times when we all want to make a contribution to climate protection, such projects are more important than ever. Flensburg is showing a good hand here and investing in a sustainable future.
