Jim Gottfridsson is leaving Germany: moving to Hungary is planned!

After a long and successful time in Germany, Jim Gottfridsson, the Swedish handball star, is moving to Hungary. After twelve exciting years at SG Flensburg-Handewitt, the 32-year-old has officially signed a contract with the Hungarian runner-up, OTP Bank Pick Szeged. So reported Handball world.

The move comes after an impressive career in which Gottfridsson was named MVP of the EHF EURO twice, namely in 2018 and 2022. His new three-year contract in the summer of 2025 reflects Pick Szeged's ambitions to position himself more strongly in the international handball scene in the future. Dr. Ernő Péter Szűcs, president of the club, is confident of Gottfridsson's international experience and his abilities on the field. “With him we are bringing a player into the team who can make a difference,” said Szűcs enthusiastically.

A new phase of life

The move to Szeged is already being planned. Gottfridsson decided to get to know the new environment thoroughly. “I don’t just want to play handball, I also want to get to know the city and the country better,” he explains. He is expected to be in training with the club from the end of July. But before that, he enjoys the last days of summer with his family in Sweden while they pack the moving boxes. The children will stay in Germany for a while to complete their schooling while Gottfridsson prepares for the next season.

In the last two seasons, Gottfridsson had little time to recover due to the Olympic Games in Paris. It is all the more important to him that he now prepares individually for the new challenge in Szeged. “I want to arrive in the best shape possible,” he says. He has been working on a specific preparation plan for days to be fit for the start of the season.

A path full of memories

For Gottfridsson, the last few years at SG Flensburg-Handewitt were marked by countless great moments on and off the field. As he begins his new journey, he likes to think back on the time and recently even attended the wedding of his former teammate Hampus Wanne. Such memories and the support of his family give him the nerve to take the next step.

With Gottfridsson, OTP Bank Pick Szeged is getting a player who is known for his high game intelligence and excellent techniques. He will certainly play a key role in a team that continues to pursue big goals in the future. Handball Planet says that the move represents good business for both sides and promises promising prospects for the Hungarian team.

We'll be watching closely to see how Gottfridsson takes the helm in Szeged!
