New year, new fight: SG Flensburg-Handewitt starts on February 10th!
Handball fans in northern Germany can look forward to exciting times. While the major national teams are preparing for the upcoming European Championship, SG Flensburg-Handewitt needs to reposition itself and tackle the coming challenges with fresh enthusiasm. The SG will play its first game of the season after the break on February 10, 2026. Before that, the first training session is scheduled for Monday, January 12th, where coach Aleš Pajović can welcome his players - but only a handful. Nine SG players are flying to the European Championships, leaving the rest of the squad behind.
The exciting climax of the European Championship will be reached on February 1st, immediately afterwards the SG will return to team training to prepare for the upcoming league games. The first of these games is an away game against VfL Gummersbach, and the DAIKIN Handball Bundesliga starts again on Tuesday, February 10th. Flensburg has two northern duels in front of it within 50 hours: first against HSV Hamburg in the Barclays Arena, followed by a show of strength on Tuesday, February 17th against THW Kiel.
European challenges for Flensburg
There are also exciting international challenges ahead for SG Flensburg-Handewitt. The Flensburg team have achieved an impressive record in the EHF European League: they are undefeated with 11 wins and 2 draws. If they defend the title, they would be the first club to do so. Montpellier HB have also achieved great things at European level and only suffered a defeat against GOG. An exciting clash with Montpellier is imminent.
The two teams have a passionate history. Flensburg has a positive record with 6 wins, 3 defeats and 3 draws against Montpellier. The last biggest meeting was in 2018, when Montpellier won the quarter-finals of the EHF Champions League and ultimately won the title. In current form, Flensburg's Emil Jakobsen, who was the top scorer in the semi-finals with 9 goals, should not be underestimated. At Montpellier, Sebastian Karlsson contributed 8 goals - both players could be the decisive protagonists in the final.
A look at the situation of the Bundesliga clubs
In addition to Flensburg, other German teams are also under pressure. Kiel and Melsungen are engaged in an exciting duel for third place, while Kiel is doing well in the league and the EHF European League after a strong home win against Melsungen (35:24). It is an emotional finale for Patrick Wiencek from Kiel as he will end his career after this season. And Melsungen faces the challenge of getting past the quarter-finals for the first time in the European Cup.
The next few months will offer not only national but also international handball action. Fans can look forward to nail-biting games, both in the league and in European competitions. It remains to be seen how the SG will fight its way back into the season after returning from the European Championship and whether it can continue to play in the concert of the big players.
The following applies to all handball enthusiasts: keep your eyes open and support the team! The sport of handball in Northern Germany is more lively than ever.
