Oeversee: After fatal accident – mayor demands speed limit!
Last weekend a tragedy happened in the community of Oeversee: an eleven-year-old boy died after a serious accident on the country road. The incident occurred on July 4, 2025, when the young cyclist wanted to cross the road at a bus stop and was hit by a 43-year-old driver. Despite all efforts, he died the following Sunday in Kiel University Hospital from his life-threatening injuries. The circumstances of the accident are still unclear and the investigation by the Tarp police station is still ongoing. In the meantime, the community will not remain idle.
Mayor Ralf Bölck has already launched initiatives to improve traffic safety at the accident site. He plans to advocate for a speed limit on highway 317, which is currently allowed to drive at 80 km/h. Due to the danger of this route, especially for children from Munkwolstrup, the municipality will send a letter to the State Ministry of Transport to demand a tightening of the speed limit and the installation of traffic lights at two critical points. In a conversation with affected parents, it became clear that there is an urgent need for action because children have to cross this busy street on their way to school.
Danger zone for school children
The accident site near Bilschau is already known to be dangerous. During a previous renovation of the street, a traffic island was installed to increase pedestrian safety. But for Mayor Bölck this is not enough. The crossing at the academy stop must also be addressed as it is also considered a risk point. A speed limit could not only reduce the speed of vehicles, but also raise awareness among drivers who often drive too fast.
This tragedy sheds light on the road safety situation. According to the German Statutory Accident Insurance (DGUV), over 100,000 accidents occur every year on the way to or from educational institutions. Around 50 percent of these accidents on the way to school occur on the road, with around 25,000 to 30,000 accidents involving bicycles. The DGUV is actively committed to raising awareness of the mobility risks for children and young people. In addition to teaching traffic rules, their goal is to promote awareness of safe participation in road traffic.
Together for more security
The tragic events of the weekend have raised awareness of road safety in Oeversee. Calling for a speed limit and other safety-promoting measures is the first step in the right direction. It is vitally important that roads become safer, especially for the youngest road users. Mayor Bölck and the municipality of Oeversee are setting a good example and showing that you don't just have to talk, you also have to act when it comes to the safety of children.
The municipality of Oeversee is hoping for a quick response from the State Ministry of Transport so that the necessary measures can be initiated. Because every accident that can be avoided counts and, in the best case, could help prevent such tragedies from happening again.
