Opel Grandland PHEV: 1034 km without a tank stop on the A7!

The Opel Grandland PHEV (Plug-in-Hybrid Electric Vehicle) impressively demonstrated its long-distance qualities in a detailed test on the A7, Germany's longest motorway. On June 17, 2025, the test drive in Garmisch started with a full battery and a full tank. The route from Füssen to Flensburg, which extends over 1,034 kilometers, is considered a real challenge, especially since the diesel drives have lost popularity. The Grandland stands out as a power pack with 195 hp, which accelerates to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds. The purchase price is 40,150 euros, which makes it an interesting option on the market, especially with regard to its standard range of 900 kilometers.

on the A7, which is the longest motorway in Germany at 962.2 km and offers a lot of mountains and hills, the reach of the Grandland was put to the test. At moderate speeds between 110 and 130 km/h, the test team managed to drive to the Danish border after 11 hours and 12 minutes. Despite the many hills and electric driving up to just before Ulm, where the electrical reach was exhausted, the Grandland showed a positive range of reach and converted recuperation into a valuable resource. In the end, the on -board computer reported 30 kilometers of remaining range, which shows that the vehicle can cope well in demanding driving situations.

New design and innovative technology

Grandland not only gained visually in its second generation, but also increased in size and comfort. With a length of 4.65 meters and a width of 1.90 meters, it is 17.5 cm longer and 6.4 cm wider than its predecessor. In combination with the StLA medium platform from Stellantis, the Grandland offers a modern interior that consists of 100% recycled materials and offers ergonomic seats for maximum driving comfort. With 550 to 1,641 liters of volume, the trunk offers a generous space.

In addition to the plug-in hybrid variant, the Grandland is now also available as a fully electric vehicle, which enables a standard range of up to 700 kilometers with a new 98 KWH battery. The prices for the mild hybrid models start at 36,400 euros, while the fully electric variant starts at 46,750 euros. A fair offer if you consider the already standard assistance systems such as automatic speed control and traffic sign recognition.

environmental and traffic development in focus

In recent years, the vehicle population in Germany has changed continuously. In 2025, according to the Federal Environment Agency (https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/daten/verkehr/verkehrsinFrastructure vehicle stock) there were 49.3 million cars, with electric vehicles and plug-in-hybrid showing a steady growth. Between 2021 and 2025, the number of electric vehicles rose to over 1.65 million, while the number of plug-in vehicles rise to 967,423 cars. This trend is also reflected in the growing interest in SUVs and narrow vehicles, which rose in total in 19.8% in 2015 to 31.3% in 2025.

It is all the more important to adapt the infrastructure accordingly. On the A7 there is a variety of rest stops and uninvied parking spaces to give drivers the necessary breaks. With such an increase in vehicles and new techniques, it remains to be seen how efficient the motorways and the entire traffic infrastructure can become in Germany in the next few years.

At the end of the test drive it became clear that the Opel Grandland Phev not only represents an all -rounder for long distances, but also an example of modern technology with a view to the environment. Whether as a plug-in hybrid or fully electric vehicle-the Grandland guarantees a good impression in the new generation.
