Renovation of the Husum bridges: winter work costs 100,000 euros more!

There is news from the harbor front in Husum! The planned renovation of the two bascule bridges - the pedestrian bascule bridge at the inland port and the harbor bascule bridge on the Westtangente - will be postponed until the 2026/27 winter season. The work was originally scheduled for the period from February to July 2026, but the building committee has now decided, based on economic considerations, that the postponement makes more sense. How NDR reported, the aim is to have as little disruption to port operations as possible during the peak tourist season.

The renovation includes extensive work such as replacing piles, electrical and hydraulic systems, as well as new corrosion protection. Such measures are necessary to ensure that the bascule bridges remain in perfect condition. However, the decision on time efficiency also entails additional costs: around 100,000 euros now have to be budgeted additionally. The recommendations from local associations and port companies were also incorporated into this decision.

Challenges during winter work

As we all know, working in the winter months can be challenging. Weather-related difficulties could delay the execution of the renovation work and also further increase costs. As long as the bridges continue to be safe and stable in the coming months, nothing stands in the way of a smooth tourist season, but those responsible are keeping a close eye on the situation.

This step is a good move for Husum, because by relocating the work, those responsible hope that the port operation will continue to be popular. Many hoteliers and catering establishments rely on the peak tourist season and can do good business during the summer months.

A look into the past shows how important the port is for the region. The development of the city of Husum over the centuries and the importance of the port are inextricably linked. Even if the focus is currently on the bridges, the port remains of great importance for the local identity and the economic basis of the city.

It remains to be hoped that the necessary work can be carried out smoothly and Husum continues to function as a popular destination for tourists and locals. It remains exciting to see how the situation develops.
