SG Flensburg defeats Melsungen: A victory with strong nerves and parades!

In a thrilling duel, SG Flensburg-Handewitt won against MT Melsungen 35:32 in Kassel on November 22, 2025. This improves their away record to 11:1 points. This game was more than just another game; it proved to be a key event that underlined the team's confidence. Coach Aleš Pajović commented on the more difficult tactical preparation and praised the patience in defense and continuity in attack.

Goalkeeper Benjamin Burić emphasized the importance of the last few saves and spoke of a bit of luck that was crucial. For him, the win against Melsungen was particularly pleasing, as the team has struggled to win in this hall in recent years. On Melsungen's side, backcourt player Nikolaj Enderleit criticized the mistakes in the final phase that ultimately led to their defeat and made it clear that scoring goals was a challenge. Marko Grgić from the SG also pointed out the suboptimal personnel situation, but was still happy about the minutes they had accumulated.

Review of the season

A look at the entire season shows that SG Flensburg-Handewitt won the European League in Hamburg on May 25, 2025, which is title number 17 in the club's history. This final was not only a sporting highlight, but also the 375th European Cup game since 1995, underlining the SG's continuous international activity over 30 years. With this triumph, the team secured qualification for the upcoming European League.

The championship celebrations took place in the “Hölle Nord” and were characterized by a large number of spectators: around 1,000 fans were there, celebrated together with the players and enjoyed the festive atmosphere. Player Jim Gottfridsson was even inducted into the Hall of Fame after 500 games. Kevin Möller secured the MVP title at the Final Four after making 21 saves in the deciding game.

Challenges and changes

Despite the successes, there were also setbacks this season. The SG was eliminated from the DHB Cup after a defeat against MT Melsungen. Coach Nicolej Krickau had to give up on December 12th and assistant coach Anders Eggert took over on an interim basis. In February, Aleš Pajović was finally hired as the new coach, which raised new hopes for the future. The team has also suffered from painful, long-term absences from Simon Pytlick and Kay Smits.

In order to further optimize sporting performance, the SG also works in cooperation with psychologists and sports scientists. Applied sports psychology aims to not only promote talent development, but also to sustainably improve the quality of training and competition. Here, basics and skills are taught both in groups and individually in order to support the team in its development. The exchange between research and practice is of central importance in order to support athletes in the best possible way and prepare them for their challenges.
