The summer holidays are just around the corner and the Flensburg region and North Frisia offer a wealth of free and inexpensive activities for young and old. How NDR reports, various events invite you to linger and discover this picturesque border region.

A real highlight is the fourth Flensburg Fairy Tale Summer, which begins on June 30, 2024. Every Sunday at 4 p.m. a different narrator tells fairy tales from all over the world on the meadow next to the water tower in Flensburg. Admission is free and the series of events is barrier-free. On the first evening of fairy tales, Sylvia Wieland tells, among other things, “Then he heard a song that was so lovely that he stopped and listened.” This magical summer lasts until September 29, 2024, and numerous stories that stimulate the imagination await visitors on various dates. For example, on June 29th, Annette Schmeling will talk about making wishes.

A view of the region

The water tower in Flensburg itself is not only the venue for the fairytale summer, but also a popular excursion destination. Visitors can enjoy the view of Flensburg every day from Wednesday to Sunday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. - entry is also free and the last entry is at 5:30 p.m.

However, the fairytale summer is just one of many open adventure chapters in the region. On Nordstrand, families can visit Kreft’s Puppet Stage, which offers puppet shows for all ages every Monday at 3:30 p.m. from July 14th to August 25th. Admission here is also free.

For those seeking adventure, there is the opportunity to take part in a scavenger hunt along the Schlei. A free app from Ostseefjord Schlei GmbH is available for this purpose, which also offers free city tours through Kappeln and Schleswig.

The special flair of Friedrichstadt

Another highlight is the charming city of Friedrichstadt, often referred to as “Little Amsterdam”. The popular sundowner beach concerts take place here on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and can be attended without admission. If you want to find out more about the city, you can take part in city tours, which are offered on Wednesdays and other days - the cost is 6.50 euros for adults and 4.50 euros for children.

Sporty spirits will get their money's worth on the Gendarmenpfad, an 84 kilometer long hiking trail along the Flensburg Fjord, which leads through picturesque landscapes in five stages and offers many special views.
