There is a special sports facility in Norderstedt that plays an important role in the history of Hamburger SV: the Paul Hauenschild facility. This is not only a place for popular sports, but also the scene of numerous successes that shaped the club's great era. The roots of this facility go back to 1928, when Paul Hauenschild, an important football official and patron of HSV, purchased the 130,000 square meter site. The wealth he left to the club enabled the facility to be expanded professionally. Hauenschild has also been one of the key figures of the HSV since its founding in 1919 and has been honored several times for his services. Among other things, this was created Paul Hauenschild Foundation and the naming of the sports fields in his honor in 1965.
A place of success and sport
The history of the facility is inextricably linked to the rise of Hamburger SV. Names like Kuno Klötzer, who was the first coach in Norderstedt to work with the professionals and led the team to significant cup wins, as well as Branko Zebec and Ernst Happel, who ensured football triumphs in the 1970s and 1980s, are closely linked to her. Zebec, known for his rigorous training, led HSV to the championship in 1979. After him, the club celebrated further successes under Happel, who is considered a tactical revolutionary and led HSV to the championship title again in 1982 and 1983 and to winning the European Cup in 1983, when Juventus was defeated in the final.
Bernd Wehmeyer, a former player, particularly remembers the exceptional training conditions in Norderstedt, which contributed significantly to the team's development. Even after professional training was relocated to the Volksparkstadion in 2004, the Paul Hauenschild facility remains an integral part of HSV history.
The look into the future
There are currently plans to further develop the center for youth and popular sports in order to strengthen HSV's connection to the region. A donation agreement is in the works and still needs to be approved by the main committee. These initiatives demonstrate the association's commitment to preserving tradition while paving new paths for future generations.
