Insolvency drama at the Geesthacht Clinic: 700 jobs at risk!

A sad day for healthcare in Schleswig-Holstein: The Geesthacht Clinic has filed for bankruptcy, and the consequences are serious. The difficulties began just four months after the takeover by the CTP Group on July 1, 2025. Experts estimate that the clinic's monthly deficit is around 600,000 euros. The 15 percent decline in treatments and insufficient patient growth contributed to the serious situation, caused by optimistic calculations and the uncertainty that arose after the previous bankruptcy, as t-online.de reports.

Not only the patients, but also around 700 employees are facing uncertain times, as around 250 jobs are threatened by planned closures of numerous departments, including intensive care, surgery and obstetrics on March 31, 2026. Mayor Olaf Schulze expressed his disappointment and called for the hospital to be kept in the hospital requirements plan.

A new glimmer of hope

After the situation escalated, there is now a small ray of hope: Thomas Pötzsch, a shipowner and logistics entrepreneur from Rellingen, has been found as the new owner. The purchase agreement was notarized on Friday, but what is important is that the creditors' committee still has to approve the agreement. Pötzsch plans to implement the takeover on July 1st. Another investor, Stephan Engels from Navicare-Med, had previously been discussed. But a notary appointment with him was canceled at short notice after crucial proof of financing was missing, which Engels denied. In a tense situation, 7,900 citizens submitted a petition to support the clinic and obstetric care, as ndr.de informed.

On Thursday, the social committee will discuss the hospital's financial situation, while there is also a new offer from an investor from Schleswig-Holstein. These developments provide a ray of hope amid the uncertainty surrounding the hospital community.

Community fights for the future

The situation shows once again how important reliable local healthcare is. Citizens are active and committed to maintaining the facilities, which shows that there is a strong community in Geesthacht that advocates for their needs. In an age in which healthcare is often under scrutiny, the development of the hospital is another important indicator of the region's stability.

It remains to be hoped that the coming weeks and months will bring clarity and the course can be set for a positive future for the Geesthacht Clinic.
