Comics on stage: Speech bubble inspires in Kiel!

The fascination for comics and the connection between art and society are the focus of the new format "Speech bubble" at the Schauspielhaus Kiel. Tristan Benzmüller, the dramaturge of the house, read great classics such as Lucky Luke, Asterix and Tim and Struppi as a child. Even if the interest in his youth subsided, the enthusiasm for the colorful stories remained. With “speech bubble” he would like to give the medium comic a stage and attract a new audience, such as KN-Online

The first appointment as part of this new format will take place on July 7th at 8 p.m. in the foyer of the Schauspielhaus. The focus will be on the graphic novel "Juliette" by Camille Jourdy. The story is about a children's book illustrator who returns to the province from Paris and gets involved in a family secret. A live reading with ensemble members will bring the narrative alive, while images are projected and supplemented by a specially developed "image tone arrangement" by Frank Böttcher, a sound engineer and video artist.

modern topics on stage

Another exciting piece in the Schauspielhaus Kiel is "Modern Mermates", which was written by Simone Safig. It gained the playwright "text fibrillation" and addressed climate change in an amusing way. In the play, the mermaids perform amphinomes and thetis, who become ecological terrorists after a failed court trial. This criticism of role assignments and pollution shows how relevant the piece is. The premiere is planned for January 2025 in the Studio of the Schauspielhaus Kiel, and the jury, who selected the winning piece, made up of well-known personalities, including Tristan Benzmüller.

juicy, which was born in Dortmund in 1993, is not only a literary scholar, but also a cultural journalist and recently received recognition for her debut piece "Talent Pool". Her work "Modern Mermates" is funded by the Berenberg Bank Foundation and promises an entertaining mixture of mythology and contemporary pop culture.

climate change and graphic novels

The increasing popularity of graphic novels is also evident in the context of climate change. In her analysis of the past two years, Susanne Billig has examined numerous titles on this critical topic. Her enthusiasm for the stylistic devices of the graphic novel, which allow to clearly present complex topics, is obvious. On Deutschlandfunk Kultur it is discussed that numerous graphic novels appear, many informative, but less narrative, contain.

In the list of recommended graphic novels to climate change, there is a variety of titles, such as "Milk without honey" by Hanna Harms, which deals with the topics of bees and pesticides, or "#Klima change Challenge", which tells with a pair of siblings about the extreme weather events.

With these exciting formats and works, the Schauspielhaus Kiel bravely bravely goes new ways. No matter whether comic lover or theater fan-there is something for everyone here!
