Deutsche Bahn sues SH: Dispute over multi-million dollar tender!

Things are boiling in Schleswig-Holstein: Deutsche Bahn has sued the state for damages. The dispute revolves around a multi-million dollar tender that was planned for rail traffic between Copenhagen, Kiel and Flensburg, but was stopped for cost reasons. That reports NDR. The railway currently operates the regional express lines RE7 and RE70, the contract for which runs until the end of 2027. The country is now looking for a new provider to serve the route over the next twelve years.

But what is going on there? The call for applications for the new contract was met with little interest. The offers already received were all rejected as too expensive. A problem involving transportation needs on weekends and at night is exacerbated by a lack of federal funding. The political discussions are also considering starting construction on a second track, which could defuse the situation somewhat.

Race for punctuality

Another sticking point is the punctuality goals. The original requirements seemed to many to be too ambitious and caused providers to shy away for economic reasons. To counteract this, the state has now lowered the punctuality requirements by three percentage points to 90 percent, with the possibility of a temporary reduction to 81 percent. The Pro Bahn passenger association shows understanding for this adjustment, which arose out of necessity.

But Deutsche Bahn is not idle either and has filed a lawsuit with the Schleswig Higher Regional Court. She is demanding compensation, but cannot stop the new tender. A verdict is expected in the coming weeks and could be crucial for the future of rail transport in Schleswig-Holstein.

Financing questions and looking ahead

The delay in the procurement process is another problem; Without a compelling offer, it will be difficult to maintain the connections you need. In Kiel, there have already been agreements between the state and the railways on important rail transport projects, but financing remains a hot topic.

In summary, the situation is extremely tense: a battle over offers, financing and punctuality that could have potential consequences for passengers. Politicians are required to quickly find solutions to make rail traffic run more smoothly and not to lose sight of the interests of passengers. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and whether there will soon be a light at the end of the tunnel.
