Interactive art party: We Are Gym inspires in Kiel!
Things get creative in Kiel: Under the title “We Are Gym”, an interactive exhibition opens at the Muthesius Art University that brings sport and art together in a completely new way. Located in the spce exhibition room, Andreas-Gayk-Straße 7-11, the show invites you to explore from July 17th to October 18th, 2025. However, the exhibition will remain closed during the summer break from July 28th to August 26th. Admission is free, making the artistic experiences even more accessible.
The central concern of this exhibition, which is supervised by Professor Frank Jacob as well as Martin Fischbock and Sven Christian Schuch, is to leave the pressure of competitive sport behind and instead redesign physical experiences. “We see ordinary fitness equipment as interfaces,” explains Jacob, and are thus developing a future-oriented experience space that focuses on physical expression. In this context, over 20 students created creative installations that reinterpret classic sports equipment.
Interactive installations that impress
The range of works on display is impressive and ranges from a punching bag that is equipped with pressure sensors and responds to touch, to an elliptical trainer with lights that glow according to movement. A special attraction is the monitor, which shows enlarged arm muscles when using a lat pull-down, thus contributing to motivation. Lin Zhu has specifically focused on the musculoskeletal system with her installations, while student Viko's punching bag provides not only physical but also linguistic feedback.
But that's not all: the exhibition also features a rowing machine that questions balance and coordination, and an ergometer that uses pedaling movements to create visual art. For acoustic fans, there is a trampoline performance that produces acoustic effects through jumps. This is a sensual experience at the highest level that appeals to all the senses and awakens both sporting and artistic curiosity.
An invitation to new target groups
What is particularly exciting is that this project not only appeals to art lovers, but to all those who have little contact with the classic art community. With this exhibition, the Muthesius Art University is also celebrating the 20th anniversary of its focus on interface design, which underlines the importance of this innovative training.
The exhibition is open Wednesday to Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and ends on October 18, 2025. For anyone who wants to rediscover their personal relationship to the body and movement, “We Are Gym” is an excellent opportunity to experience art in an interactive and engaging way.
Follow the development of this unique exhibition that turns many clichés about art and fitness on their head. Even after the official end, the exhibitions can live on in the spce with a professional corporate design and merchandise.
