Günter Grass House in Lübeck: Modernized and ready to reopen!

After a four-month modernization phase, the Günter Grass House in Lübeck reopened its doors on June 15, 2025. On the opening day, many visitors flocked to the newly designed literature house, which presented itself with a fresh shine. During the renovation, the focus was, among other things, on replacing the lighting system and improving fire protection. Instead of conventional incandescent lamps, energy-saving LED lamps were installed, which not only enhances the atmosphere, but also promises future cost savings of several thousand euros per year. The renovation work also brings conservation and scenic benefits that are intended to enhance the experience for visitors

Until June 20, 2025, those interested in culture can visit the Günter Grass House for half the price of admission. And that's not all: On June 24, 2025, the opening of the new special exhibition “Else Lasker-Schuler – Artist, Poet, World Builder” is on the program. This event promises to provide an exciting insight into the life and works of the famous poet and artist.

A look at the permanent exhibition

The Günter Grass House houses an exciting permanent exhibition entitled “This is Grass”. Here visitors get a comprehensive overview of the life and work of the writer, who was born in Gdansk in 1927. Günter Grass, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999, is particularly known for his novel “The Tin Drum,” which had a literary influence on the post-war period. In addition to his literary successes, he was also active as a graphic artist and sculptor, which underlines the diversity of his artistic expression.

The exhibition not only features Grass' personal items and documents, but also interactive media stations that are accessible to people of all ages. Anyone who visits the special exhibition about Else Lasker-Schuler can look forward to a multi-faceted presentation: original drawings, publications and letters from Lasker-Schuler are on display and reflect her artistic work. These presentations are complemented by works by young artists who offer a current perspective on their work.

An indispensable part of literary history

Günter Grass was a formative figure in German literature and politics. In addition to his literary masterpieces, which also include “Cat and Mouse” and “Dog Years,” he was politically active, including as a member of the SPD and during election campaigns. Over the years he has initiated many discussions and repeatedly commented on social issues. His revelation about his membership in the Waffen-SS as a 17-year-old sparked controversial debates about his moral role in society.

The Günter Grass House is a reminder not only of the author's diverse work, but also of the lively cultural history that he shaped. A visit to the house is therefore not only a nice event for literature lovers, but also offers the opportunity to find out more about the background of one of Germany's most important writers. Further information about the program and the special exhibition can be found on the house's website here and in the NDR reports. In Günter Grass's biography you can also find out more about his eventful life, which is documented on hdg.de.
