Lübeck is celebrating: a large folk festival with a spectacular Ferris wheel opens!
The wait is over! The 177th Lübeck Folk and Remembrance Festival opened last Friday, and there was great joy. mayor Jan Lindenau and Janine Belli, the new chairwoman of the showmen's association in Lübeck and the surrounding area, ceremoniously cut the red ribbon on the Ferris wheel. An impressive spectacle where many visitors gathered on the first afternoon to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
The folk festival is an important part of Lübeck's culture and is enjoying ever-growing popularity. In his opening speech, Mayor Lindenau emphasized the importance of such traditions for the community. What is particularly noteworthy is that he took various measures during the pandemic to give showmen the opportunity to generate income. Thanks to his commitment, not only residents but also many guests come to Lübeck.
Traditions and highlights
The folk festival offers numerous attractions and highlights. The highlights include the fireworks that light up the night sky on Fridays and the big parade that starts on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Gustav-Radbruch-Platz. The train moves over Königstrasse and Holstenstrasse to the majestic Holstentor. Traditionally, Wednesday is declared a savings day when visitors can benefit from reduced prices.
A particularly lively atmosphere was created by the performances of the German Youth Brass Band, which created a good atmosphere. Such events are not only important for Lübeck residents, but also attract foreign guests, which underlines the city's character as a lively event location.
Folk festivals in Germany
In the larger context, folk festivals are an integral part of German culture. In total there are around 9,750 folk festivals throughout the country, which are also called fairs or fairgrounds. Every year around 190 million people flock to these festivals, depending on the weather of course. The largest and most famous folk festival is the Oktoberfest in Munich, which begins in mid-September and offers numerous attractions and large beer tents in which millions of people celebrate.
The Lübeck Folk and Remembrance Festival is part of this tradition and shows how important such events are for the local and regional sense of community. It not only promotes the local economy, but also interpersonal relationships and strengthens the connection between Lübeck residents and their city.
We look forward to many happy hours at the festival, wish everyone involved good luck and all visitors an unforgettable experience!
