Nordic Film Days start: 191 films – what you should know!

Things are really busy in Lübeck at the moment, as this year's Nordic Film Days are taking place until November 9th. This event presents an impressive portfolio of 191 films in total, which will be shown in five different venues. These include the Cinestar Lübeck, the Filmhaus, the Kommunale Kino (KoKi), the 360 degree Infinity Dome and the puppet theater and museum KOLK 17. The variety ranges from feature films to documentaries to short films and immersive media, which is really exciting.

The opening film, “Therapy for Vikings,” immediately attracts everyone’s attention. Directed by Anders Thomas Jensen, the protagonists, played by Mads Mikkelsen, Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Søren Malling, go in search of the money from a bank robbery. They come into contact with their own memories from childhood, which gives the film a special touch. The world premiere of the documentary “Astrid Lindgren – humanity has lost its mind” by Wilfried Hauke also caused a stir and sheds light on Astrid Lindgren's diary from the Second World War, a topic that could not be more topical.

Diversity of topics and talents

The Nordic Film Days not only offer films for adults, but also a section for the younger generation called “Young Audience”. Here children and young people can watch films that deal with the topic of “cracks in the walls”. There are also films like “Prange – Man is a Neighbor” with Bjarne Mädel, which deals with loneliness and social interaction. The variety of topics extends to political documentation and dealing with indigenous peoples as well as the care of older people.

Particular focus is on the Nordic Film Days Honorary Prize, which is awarded to the renowned director Bent Hamer. The award is presented by Jim Stark and recognizes Hamer's notable works such as "Eggs", "Kitchen Stories", "O'Horten", "Factotum" and "1001 Grams". In addition, prizes with a total value of 67,500 euros will be awarded to a total of twelve juries and audience winners. This shows that the festival is not only a platform for new talent, but also a place of honor for deserving artists.

Immersive experiences for everyone

A highlight of the event is the 360 degree Infinity Dome, which offers immersive cinema and multimedia performances. This form of storytelling brings the audience directly into the action and allows them to become part of the event. A real experience for all film enthusiasts! The Nordic Film Days in Lübeck are more than just a film event; they are a cultural event that brings together different genres and themes for all ages.

Starting next year, the artistic direction of the festival will be taken over by Hanna Reifgerst, who will bring a breath of fresh air and new perspectives on board. If you didn't have the opportunity to visit the Nordic Film Days this year, you should definitely make a note of next year's event, because this is where film culture comes to life!
