Parking garage Am Holstentor: closure due to static problems!

In Lübeck there is news about the “Am Holstentor” car park. From December 31, 2023, this will be closed until further notice. The reason for the closure is structural problems that were discovered seven years ago. Since then, regular stress tests have been carried out, which only allowed continued use temporarily. Dr. Ralph Bruns, the parking division manager at KWL GmbH, announced this decision and explained that more intensive investigations are necessary to ensure the safety of the structure. All long-term tenants have already been informed about the closure.

KWL's goal is to continue to operate the parking garage with monitoring for as long as possible, provided this is economically viable. However, it remains unclear whether this can be achieved, as the results of the planned tests will be crucial. The citizens of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck had already decided in 2019 to build a new parking garage at this location. An architectural competition has already been completed, but the implementation of the new building depends on various factors, including economic viability. In the coming weeks, the citizenry will have to decide on the further process.

Stress tests and their findings

The reasons for the closure are complex. According to a report from Stressesprüfung.com, the parking garage was constructed according to the Russian SNiP standard and a recalculation showed that the construction is not load-bearing. Extensive load tests have already been carried out, which apparently showed non-linear deformation behavior above the service load. Critical values for crack widths were reached, and sound emission measurements also indicated problems that were probably caused by existing cracks or detached road surfaces.

The aim of the tests was to identify components that have unfavorable conditions. During the investigations, partial cracks of up to w ≤ 1.0 mm appeared, which were then repaired. To ensure the durability of the structure, renewing the roadway waterproofing and coating the cracked surfaces are recommended.

Looking into the future

Similar to the citizens, the KWL could also rely on positive results of the stress tests. If these tests are successful in 2026, an extension of the operating license for the existing parking garage could be in prospect. But as everyone who lives here knows: the next few weeks will be crucial. The KWL has assured that it will inform the public about the next steps.

All in all, it remains exciting to see what will happen to the “Am Holstentor” car park. Whether renovating or building new, the coming decisions could have far-reaching effects on parking options in the heart of Lübeck. Until then it's time to wait and drink tea - or rather: wait and park!
