Security campaign: Coding your bikes on July 17th in Lübeck!
What's happening in Lübeck? Soon, on Thursday, July 17, 2025, all cyclists will have the opportunity to have their bicycles, e-bikes, strollers and walkers coded. The event will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the parking lot opposite the 3rd police station at Meesenring 9. This is an initiative to improve theft protection that is being carried out by a specialist company together with the police. Registration is not necessary and participation is open to all Lübeck residents and those interested from the surrounding area.
The costs for coding are very moderate: bicycles cost 18 euros, e-bikes including batteries cost 28 euros, and strollers and walkers only cost 10 euros. Police officers will be on site and answer questions about theft protection. Coding itself proves to be a useful option for making bicycles less attractive to potential thieves and increasing security.
The importance of coding
The numbers speak for themselves: around 300,000 bicycles are stolen in Germany every year, and particularly valuable models such as e-bikes are often the target of thieves. Bicycle coding, which is done as an engraving or sticker, makes resale much more difficult for thieves. The coding system contains an encrypted personalized code that allows police or lost property offices to identify the owner. This code consists of an owner identification number (EIN) and even includes information such as the license plate number and the owner's initials, which can ensure smooth repatriation in an emergency. The coding itself is completed in just about a quarter of an hour.
It is also advisable to park your bike in stable places with strong locks. Again ADAC added, it is particularly important to take measures to protect pedelecs and e-bikes, as these often become targets for theft due to their higher cost.
Insurance as additional security
Another aspect that cyclists should not forget is insurance coverage. Special bicycle or e-bike insurance usually offers more comprehensive services than normal household contents insurance. In the event of theft, compensation could be higher, and policies also cover damage caused by vandalism or accidents. Owners of high-quality bicycles in particular should consider taking out such insurance, as the protection should contribute to the safety of their beloved bike.
For the forward-thinking cyclist, it is advisable to always provide proof of ownership by keeping invoices and the frame number and taking photos of the bike. Anyone who thinks that they should act in good time and have their bike coded in Lübeck on July 17th is definitely on the right track. On this day, not only is theft protection optimized, but the value of your own bike is also secured.
