More safety for helpers: Petition launched for protection at deployment sites!

The fire brigades in Schleswig-Holstein demonstrated extraordinary achievements in 2025, which not only included on-site operations, but also numerous activities in the background. SHZ reports that State Fire Chief Jörg Nero emphasizes that it is important to focus on the diverse tasks, such as exercises, training and fire safety education.

A key concern of fire departments is safety at accident scenes. A current petition, “More safety by far,” aims for a legal regulation that should better protect fire and rescue workers. This initiative is carried out by Schleswig-Holstein State Fire Brigade Association and other blue light organizations are supported. The often life-threatening situations for emergency services can be greatly reduced by increasing speed protection behavior on the part of road users.

Safety precautions at deployment sites

There is currently no clear legal regulation in Germany for the behavior of vehicle drivers at emergency locations. The petition therefore calls for concrete changes that are based on Section 20 of the Road Traffic Act (StVO). Suggestions include significantly reducing speed and changing lanes when possible. A goal of 30,000 signatures was set.

In order to ensure the safety of fire brigade members, it is important that appropriate warning and barrier measures are taken during operations. Safe Fire Department explains that dangers can arise from moving traffic and inadequate lighting. Therefore, all operational areas must be secured immediately to minimize the risks.

Curvy or poorly visible areas are particularly dangerous, which is why additional safety devices such as traffic cones and warning lights should be used. The right high-visibility clothing is also crucial in order to make the emergency services clearly visible to other road users. Fluorescent material is recommended in daylight and retroreflective material in darkness.

A look ahead to 2026

In its outlook for the future, the Schleswig-Holstein Fire Brigade Magazine highlights important topics that are coming up in 2026, such as the large “INTERSCHUTZ” trade fair and the Fire Brigades Day in December. These events should be used to provide information about the necessary attention and educational work of the fire departments.

It is therefore essential to continue the dialogue with the public about traffic and operational safety. As the examples show, it is not only the operation itself that is important, but also the legal framework and warning measures that work in the background. It is the responsibility of all road users to contribute to the safety of emergency services.

For further information and current developments, it is worth taking a look at the fire brigade websites and the suggestions from the initiators of the petition.
