The Night of the Churches is upon us again! On Saturday, September 20, 2025, the 22nd edition of this unique ecumenical event will take place in Hamburg. From 7 p.m. more than 80 churches in and around Hamburg will open their doors and invite you to over 330 events. Under the motto“Light in the Dark”Visitors can expect a varied program of concerts, readings and discussion formats that offer something for all age groups. As n-tv reports, this event is celebrated as the largest church event in northern Germany.

The event is new this year“Rock Hard Hallelujah – Metal Church”, which takes place in the St. Johannis-Harvestehude. Here the sounds of rock music will merge with the accents of church music culture. Church musician Christopher Bender will captivate the audience with his unique mix of organ sounds and electronic sounds. The traditional opening of the night will take place on the NDR stage on Spitaler Straße, where high-profile representatives of the churches, such as Kirsten Fehrs, the chairwoman of the EKD council and Hamburg bishop, and Stephan Heße, the Hamburg archbishop, are expected.

Community celebration for the 777th anniversary

Also on Saturday, September 20th, a large community festival will be celebrated in front of and in St. Martin's Church to mark the community's 777th anniversary. The event area becomes a colorful festival area that appeals to both families and children. The little guests can look forward to an exciting program with jumping pillows, face painting, a hands-on circus and a campfire where stick bread can be baked.

There is plenty of information and activities for the entire family at the community group locations. A special highlight of the stage program will be the pack singing, which is intended to encourage visitors to sing along, as well as a pub quiz and performances by young people and Pastor Martin. Delicious meals with coffee, cake and hearty snacks are guaranteed.

Commitment and support for the Ahrensburger Tafel

Another highlight of the festival is the hands-on activity, in which participants create a joint puzzle picture for St. Martin's Church. This campaign is combined with a fundraising campaign for the Ahrensburger Tafel. The festival starts at 2 p.m. – an occasion that no one should miss!

Germany offers a variety of music festivals, and the German Music Information Center particularly highlights church music festivals. These festivals are characterized by internationally significant topics and a special musical focus. Church music will also be a central part of the “Night of the Churches” in Hamburg. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the variety of musical performances in a spiritual environment.

Be it in church or at a community festival, September 20th promises to be a day full of light, music and community. There is a lot to discover in Hamburg and the surrounding area!
