The surge is prompting police to plan preventive measures, including the introduction of electronic ankle bracelets for violent offenders, to prevent potential recidivism. A look back at the year 2024 shows that around 217,000 violent crimes were registered across Germany - the highest number since 2007. This represents a worrying increase.

Delicate numbers

And the numbers speak for themselves: 1,187 knife attacks were documented in 2024, which is 130 more cases than in the previous year. While property crimes in general fell by 3.3%, burglaries increased by an alarming 34.7%, particularly in basements and attics.

What is particularly striking is the increase in violent crime, which is associated with the social and economic uncertainties and the psychological consequences of the corona pandemic. The proportion of young suspects has also increased. A few years ago this figure was less than 30%, while the current reality shows that around a third of suspects are under 21 years old.

Social impact

These developments and their impact on citizens' sense of security are alarming. Precisely because violent crimes make up less than 4% of crimes recorded by the police, they have a strong influence on people's subjective sense of security. According to a survey in May 2024, 94% of Germans see violence and aggression against the police and rescue workers as a major problem. Statista reports that more than 2,740 acts of violence against emergency workers were recorded in 2023.

In this context, the police urge you to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately. The feeling of security is at risk and it is time to find solutions together to improve the situation. Everyone can do their part by staying alert and, if in doubt, calling the emergency number 112. With a whole-of-society approach, it could be possible to reduce the worrying numbers and thus create a safer environment.
