Construction site chaos in Neumünster: district heating work until the end of 2025!
Road users in Neumünster will face challenges in the coming months, as several construction sites are causing extensive changes in the city. Stadtwerke Neumünster (SWN) is making far-reaching changes to the district heating network, which are intended to modernize the infrastructure and make it more environmentally friendly.
The first major construction site concerns the intersection of Haart/Altonaer Straße, where work will begin on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Here the district heating network is being converted from steam to heating water, which is not only more efficient but also more climate-friendly. The intersection is expected to remain closed until the end of October 2025. Despite the construction site, traffic between Plöner Straße and Großflecken as well as between Altonaer Straße and Wittorfer Straße remains possible. A detour is signposted and pedestrians and cyclists can pass through the construction site. The bus timetables will be adjusted during the construction phase and can be viewed on the SWN website. The Teichbrücke and Rathaus stops, which are only served by certain lines, are particularly affected.
Further construction sites: Bachstrasse and Holsatenring
Bachstrasse has also been closed for district heating work since April 7, 2025. The work, which is also being carried out by the municipal utilities, affects the section between Beethovenstrasse and Mozartstrasse and is expected to last until the end of June 2025. During this time, car traffic in the area will be completely closed, limiting accessibility for residents. However, they were informed about the details by letter. Pedestrians and cyclists can still pass through the area, and the Bad am Stadtwald parking lot remains fully accessible. Important: The supply of district heating is secured throughout the entire construction work and is in line with the climate protection goals in Neumünster.
A third construction site on Holsatenring began on May 12, 2025. Here the roadway will be closed at the level of the Mühlenhof and traffic will be redirected with a lane narrowing. Interestingly, a one-way street regulation on Gartenstrasse will be lifted during the construction phase, which will create additional space for diversions. These measures will last until June 6, 2025. The Mühlenhof itself will also receive a new access road, as the previous one will become a dead end.
All measures taken together are intended not only to improve the quality of life in Neumünster, but also to make the district heating network future-proof. Residents will continue to be informed and accessibility for the fire brigade and waste collection service will remain guaranteed during construction. This means that something is happening in Neumünster and, despite the short-term inconveniences, people will ultimately benefit from the improvements.
