Demonstration in Neumünster: Citizens demand tolerance against the right!
There is unrest in Neumünster once again, and for good reason. The Association for Tolerance and Civil Courage organized a demonstration that took place on Saturday, November 15, 2025, against a controversial celebration in the “Zur Klostermühle” restaurant. 50 participants were expected in advance, but only 30 people showed up to protest against the right-wing radical influence in their city. KN Online reports that demonstrators raised their voices against Nazis while over 50 police officers kept the situation under control.
The celebration that gave rise to the protest was organized for Horst Dieter Micheel, a member of the Heimat Neumünster party, which emerged from the former NPD. According to reports, guests in the restaurant looked out curiously from behind drawn curtains while the demonstrators took an hour-long break on the esplanade. A board member of the association pointed out that the “Zur Klostermühle” was once a popular meeting place, but unfortunately it has also become a contact point for right-wing extremists.
The context of the protests
It is not the first time that Neumünster residents have demonstrated against the right. In March 2025, around 700 people gathered in the city to make a statement. These actions, led by the “Citizens' Initiative Northern Germany”, are in line with numerous protests taking place across Germany against the shift to the right and for diversity. Showcase protests in cities like Berlin and Munich show that the issue remains on the agenda and many are fighting to defend democratic values. Tagesschau.de reports that hundreds of thousands took part in demonstrations in various cities to advocate for a colorful and open society.
In Neumünster, however, the situation is further complicated by internal conflicts within the anti-fascist scene. As the SHZ reports, there is resentment over the emergence of Antifa members known as the “black bloc,” which may deter some people from participating in demonstrations. Christof Ostheimer, a member of the Round Table for Tolerance and Democracy, expresses concerns that the aggressive behavior of Antifa is endangering cohesion. These tensions make it difficult to form a unified front against right-wing extremism.
The attitude on site
The group “Grandmas Against the Right”, which was founded by Ute (71) and Iris (69), also appeared at the current demo. They are actively involved against right-wing activities and meet regularly at the AJZ on Friedrichstrasse. Your initiative is a further expression of resistance against the rise of right-wing tendencies in Neumünster, which has been shaping city politics for years.
The demonstration on Saturday proves that despite the tense atmosphere, the citizens of Neumünster are not remaining silent. The decision of the Association for Tolerance and Civil Courage to take action against further advances by right-wing groups is supported by many in the city. While the curtains remained closed for the celebration in the “Zur Klostermühle” restaurant, the demonstrators sent a sign of solidarity for a tolerant and diverse community in Neumünster.
