Greens in SH: Rudow and Freitag new chairmen – a strong team!

What exciting times these are for the Greens in Schleswig-Holstein! At the last party conference in Neumünster, Lydia Rudow (35) and Gazi Freitag (45) were elected as the new chairmen. The mood was harmonious, and the two managed to catapult themselves onto the board with overwhelming votes - Rudow received 80% and Freitag 76% of the votes, as NDR reported.

Rudow, who has over 16 years of experience with the Greens and has worked, among other things, as state chairwoman of the Green Youth and as parliamentary group leader in the Kiel council assembly, saw her return not just as a comeback, but as a solid new beginning. She made it clear that she did not want to appear from the sidelines. Together with Gazi Freitag, who has been a member of the Greens since 2015 and advocates for more citizen participation in political decisions, she wants to strengthen the party organizationally and in terms of content. Freitag, who has also been state chairman of the Northern Greens since 2022, emphasized in his speech that the party's success comes from the grassroots, which now has over 8,500 members.

Farewell and new beginnings

In her farewell speech, outgoing chairwoman Anke Erdmann pointed out the “longing for cohesion” within the party and called for people to also talk to political opponents. Last but not least, she is the partner of Kiel Mayor Ulf Kampf, who will run as the SPD's top candidate against CDU Prime Minister Daniel Günther in 2027. In order to avoid election campaigns within the family, Erdmann did not stand for re-election South Germans supplemented.

The new chairmen now face some challenges. Parliamentary group leader Lasse Petersdotter openly expressed his displeasure with the results of the last federal election and spoke of an increasingly “rough wind” in the political landscape. At the same time, Environment Minister Tobias Goldschmidt called for the climate goals not to be watered down and sharply criticized the federal government.

On the agenda

Numerous discussions are planned for the coming days, which will also include exciting topics such as pensions, daycare centers and child protection. The debate on the topic of defense will be particularly interesting, where different proposals regarding conscription and voluntary service are on the table. And also the top candidate for the state elections? This will be discussed in the summer, which will keep the tension high.

A common concern of the Greens, CDU, SPD and SSW is the renaming of street names in Kiel. The FDP is holding back here and is having a hard time getting involved. So it remains to be seen how the political winds in Schleswig-Holstein will develop further.

How the Green Party website shows, the new state executive board relies on a diverse and at the same time cohesive leadership structure: with two equal chairmen and various deputies, green politics should be strongly presented both internally and externally.
