21 cities shine with the label CityGreen, close to nature” – a green future!

In a ceremony in Kronberg im Taunus on September 23, 2025, the “StadtGrün naturnah” label was awarded to a total of 21 cities and municipalities. This award is not only a sign of commitment to the environment, but also a significant step towards promoting biological diversity in urban areas. The newly awarded municipalities include Boizenburg on the Elbe, Hagen in the Teutoburg Forest, Kamp-Lintfort, Münster (Westphalia), Norderstedt, Oldenburg, Poing, Schneverdingen, Stockach, Waren (Müritz) and Weilheim in Upper Bavaria. This means that the number of certified cities and municipalities has increased to 81, as reported by sonnenseite.com.

The first city councilor of Kronberg, Heiko Wolf, welcomed the guests and emphasized the importance of natural green spaces for the citizens' quality of life. Yvonne Richter from Stadtwerke presented the city's natural garden, in which ecological principles are practiced. The organizers emphasize that all of the award-winning municipalities have implemented measures to promote biological diversity. This includes the creation of species-rich urban green spaces with flowering meadows, herbaceous beds, hedges and healthy trees.

Growing and learning for nature

The certification is part of a process that lasted more than a year in which the municipalities were comprehensively supported. Particularly noteworthy: Ten municipalities that were already recognized in 2021 have successfully undergone recertification, and four of them were even able to improve their rating. Bielefeld, Blankenburg, Stutensee and Wittenberg have reached higher levels in the label. Awards for the new certifications show that many cities have great interest in the natural development of their green spaces.

Not to be forgotten, the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BfN) emphasizes that larger, connected green spaces are crucial for biodiversity and the inner-city climate. As part of the N.A.T.U.R. project Municipalities are supported to promote the natural design, maintenance and networking of their green spaces, as bfn.de reports. This is done through practical advice and training measures in order to develop better green space management.

Together for the future of urban nature

The fact that citizens are actively involved in these projects is a central point for future development. BUND supports this through workshops and events that promote exchange about municipal biodiversity strategies. The aim is to transfer the national biodiversity strategies to the municipal level in order to create more green spaces and thus strengthen and expand the urban nature program, as bund.net reports.

A strong indication of the importance of urban nature: the new European Biodiversity Strategy 2030 calls for comprehensive efforts by municipalities to increase biological diversity. The political perspective must change in order to create more support for the natural development of cities. It is to be hoped that this positive trend will continue and that citizens with a strong awareness of their environment will continue to be involved in the development of sustainable green spaces.
