Ahrensburg inclusion team: Cyclocross World Cup starts in Italy!

A special event is coming up: On Sunday at 4.30 p.m. the inclusion team from the WEcycle club from Ahrensburg will be competing at the Cyclocross World Championships in Italy. This marks a historic moment, as the team is the first German inclusion cyclocross team to take part in a World Cup abroad. Around 600 athletes from all over the world will gather in Varese to compete against each other in this exciting cycling discipline.

Cyclocross is known for its varied courses in which athletes must not only ride, but also run across different sections of terrain. Whether it's a bumpy forest path or an urban park, this discipline combines endurance, technique and skill. The six-member WEcycle team has big plans and is striving for sporting success, but in addition to the medal, the athletes also focus on the joy of taking part. As NDR reports, the team's focus was not only on competition, but also on team spirit.

A pioneering role in inclusion

The participation of the WEcycle team is not only a sporting highlight, but also a significant step for inclusion in sport as a whole. The “Index for Inclusion in and through Sport”, developed by the German Disabled Sports Association, serves as a guide to actively promote inclusion in the sports landscape. It offers support for sports associations and clubs to enable self-determination, participation and equality. These approaches are essential to meet diverse needs and create an inclusive sports culture, as explained on the DBS-NPC website.

Interest in inclusion programs and activities continues to grow, giving many athletes with disabilities the opportunity to participate in sports and demonstrate their abilities. With this commitment, the WEcycle team also wants to motivate others to take on the challenges of sport.

A look at the World Championships

The Cyclocross World Championships is a major sporting event that took place this year in Liévin, northern France, from January 31st to February 2nd. 291 drivers from 25 countries competed there. As can be seen from [Wikipedia](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclocross World Championships_2025), well-known names such as Mathieu van der Poel and Fem van Empel were successful and expanded their collection of championship titles.

A success for the WEcycle team could be the signal for greater inclusion in cycling. At a time when diversity and integration in sport are becoming increasingly important, the Ahrensburg team is setting an example. This makes it clear that sport has the power to overcome boundaries and bring people together, regardless of individual challenges.

The anticipation for the race on Sunday is growing – for the WEcycle athletes and the entire region that stands behind them. With ambition and team spirit, they will do their best and no matter what the result, they will go down in the history books of inclusion in sport.
