New timetable from December: This is how local transport in South Holstein is changing!

What’s new for commuters in South Holstein? From December 14, 2025, comprehensive changes to the timetable of the AKN and the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (hvv) will come into force. These adjustments affect several important transport links and are intended to help cope with the increasing number of passengers, which has increased noticeably following the pandemic.

In particular, the MetroBus line 2 between Schenefeld in the Pinneberg district and Hamburg-Altona as well as the Hamburg subway line 4 and the S-Bahn line 2 will be revised. For the AKN line 2, which runs between Neumünster and Norderstedt Mitte, trains will now only run every 20 minutes, in contrast to the previous 10-minute frequency. In order to cushion the burden on commuters, the AKN is planning additional buses.

Return of passengers

As the VDV reports, local public transport (ÖPNV) is recovering quickly from the declines recorded during the corona pandemic. Around 26 million passengers now use buses and trains in Germany every day, which means that public transport saves an average of 10 million car journeys.

The demand for sustainable mobility solutions is increasing, which not only makes ecological sense but also provides economic stimulus. The sustainable mobility industry generates around 118 billion euros in added value in Germany every year. These figures show how important public transport is for our society.

Additional measures by Deutsche Bahn

In addition to the changes at AKN and hvv, Deutsche Bahn has also announced adjustments to its timetables. Although detailed information is still missing, it is clear that the changes will also have far-reaching effects on commuters from South Holstein.

A look at the prospects shows that the trend towards closer networking of public transport offers is continuing and the mobility transition is gaining momentum. This not only means more passengers, but also a strong commitment to the environment, which is more important than ever in times of climate change and resource scarcity.

The anticipation of the new timetables and the associated increase in efficiency is palpable. It remains to be seen how these measures will be specifically implemented in the South Holstein region to make everyday life easier for commuters.
