Roses against violence: Women's protest demands respect in delivery rooms!
Today, November 25, 2025, the International Day against Violence against Women is being celebrated worldwide. A significant event is “Roses Revolution Day”, which aims to draw attention to the abuses and experiences of violence in obstetrics. Roses are laid in front of numerous delivery rooms in Germany, including in the Pinneberg district - a silent protest for more respect and safer conditions during birth. The initiative is largely supported by Mascha Grieschat, a committed activist from the region. She is co-founder of “Just Birth” and is committed to sustainable change in obstetric care.
The Roses Revolution is a global movement launched in 2011 by birth activist Jesusa Ricoy and has since gained international popularity. The first campaigns in Germany were initiated in 2013 when Katharina Hartmann organized the first rose campaign via Facebook. Since then, numerous women from different countries have taken part in this important movement to protest against experiences of violence during childbirth. Many women report verbal and psychological violence that they experienced during childbirth. The most common topics are a lack of education, pressure and discriminatory comments, as is also supported by the regular reporting of NDR.
Make a mark
Today's campaign not only brings visibility for affected women, but is also intended to trigger a rethink in the delivery room. According to ZDF, about one in three women experience violence during childbirth. Abuses include physical abuse, humiliation and forcing medical procedures without consent. This practice is not only unacceptable, but also partially violates the laws that protect the physical integrity of patients. In such cases, doctors not only face claims for damages, but also criminal consequences.
Psycho-social consequences for affected women can be devastating; many develop post-traumatic stress disorder or depression. In view of these alarming facts, it is critical to rethink the structures in obstetric care and improve the conditions for women giving birth. In particular, the inadequate information and the often lack of respect for women's wishes must be addressed in order to create a safer environment.
Shaping the future
The norms that have existed for years and the patriarchal culture, which are also noticeable in the birth environment, require fundamental changes. It should be noted that the working conditions of midwives and the training of gynecologists also need to be reconsidered in order to enable respectful birth. The “Roses Revolution” movement is gaining momentum and increasing numbers of participants are expected in the coming years, demonstrating the high need for a better birthing environment. The current growth in awareness among women about their rights and physical integrity is encouraging and gives hope for a positive change in obstetric care, as the Fair Birth Initiative also emphasizes.
From a socio-ecological perspective, today's actions should not only be a response to existing grievances, but also serve as a role model for the future generation. Only together can we ensure that every woman can give birth in a respectful and non-violent environment. Today we are setting an example with the roses – for a better tomorrow.
