Crime scene cleaner meets vegan: A moral conflict in Norderstedt!
On October 24, 2025, the Kulturwerk am See in Norderstedt will be the scene of an explosive debate about morality, factory farming and the complex questions surrounding meat consumption. In the sequel to “The Crime Scene Cleaner,” which is titled “Can you eat animals?” the protagonist Heiko “Schotty” Schotte meets the radical vegan Kim. This conflict not only unfolds in the dialogues between the main characters, but is also reinforced by Schotty's challenges in his job at a consulting company, where he has to assert himself against the pressure of the managing director Grimmehein. Stadtmagazin SH reports that Schotty remains unimpressed despite Grimmehein's psychological tricks and has to prove his skills in an evaluation.
The plot culminates in a tragic assignment in which Schotty is supposed to clean the blood of a deceased person after an accident in a clubhouse. He discovers a back room with Nazi memorabilia, which further increases the political explosiveness of the scene. The club's chairman has extremist views, which confronts Schotty with his own approach to the issues.
The explosive topic of animal welfare
In connection with the performance, the timeless theme of animal use and protection in society comes to life. Historically, animal welfare was a controversial area during the Nazi regime, with even some of the leading figures, such as Adolf Hitler, showing some interest in animal welfare. Wikipedia notes that various measures were taken to protect animals during this period, although the reality was often one of brutality. Laws that were supposed to promote animal welfare were sometimes circumvented or completely ignored.
Current discussions on the topic of animal welfare show an equally large gap between legal requirements and reality. Steffen Augsberg, professor of public law, emphasizes that the animal protection law represents a legal challenge and that the rights of animals are often not enforced. Deutschlandfunk Kultur reports on the moral and legal dilemmas faced by animals that are neither legal subjects nor fully material assets, and criticizes that current factory farming may be viewed as unacceptable in society.
The questions at hand are urgent: Can you eat animals? And if so, under what conditions? Schotty not only has a duty to question his own moral beliefs, but also those of society, which often does not care about the stories of suffering behind the meat products on the shelves. In the play, the audience witnesses a profound reflection on their own responsibility in dealing with animals and the complex reality of factory farming.
