NORLA 2025: Celebrations for agriculture – future prizes and innovations!

Today, September 4th, 2025, the NORLA agricultural and consumer fair opened in Rendsburg, a festival that is of great importance not only for the region, but also for the entire agriculture in Schleswig-Holstein. Prime Minister Daniel Günther and State Parliament President Kristina Herbst did not miss the opportunity to be present at this special 75th anniversary of the trade fair. In the coming days, over 500 exhibitors will be presenting products and services from various areas - from agriculture to home and garden to nutrition and energy. The fair, which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until September 7th, is expecting around 70,000 visitors.

A festive highlight this year is the 34th State Animal Show, where several hundred animals from Schleswig-Holstein breeding associations can be seen. For younger fair visitors, there is a miniature farm where they can interact with remote-controlled tractors and a variety of hands-on activities. And your physical well-being is also taken care of: there is a wide selection of food and drinks in the farm garden and the “Café Klönschnack”.

Challenges and innovations in agriculture

Agriculture is currently facing a variety of challenges, be it due to extreme weather, changing consumer demands or complex legal frameworks. Prime Minister Günther emphasized how important farmers are for our landscape, culture and food production. Political support, such as abolishing the material flow balance and full reimbursement for agricultural diesel, should improve the framework conditions and reduce bureaucracy. One step in this direction is the establishment of a staff unit to reduce bureaucracy by the new Federal Minister of Agriculture.

This year at NORLA a lot revolves around digitalization in agriculture, a topic that has become increasingly important in recent years. The focus is on the use of drones, for example, which are used to track down fawns or to assess the population. Innovative technologies such as the autonomous field robot AgBot T2 and automated milking systems that monitor animal health and reduce the burden on milking times show what the future of agriculture looks like. These developments are not only efficient, but also contribute to environmentally friendly agriculture.

Appreciation and future prospects

The appreciation for the work of farmers must increase in order to create better framework conditions. A dialogue process that was started in 2018 and focuses on the “future of agriculture” has already formulated 24 theses for sustainable agriculture. The state government continues to look for innovative projects to implement these ideas and is awarding the “Agriculture Future Prize”, which is endowed with 10,000 euros. Interested parties can submit their applications until October 31, 2025.

NORLA not only offers a wonderful setting for exhibitors and visitors, but also the opportunity to intensively deal with the current challenges and innovative solutions in agriculture. The future of agriculture is in our hands – and this requires ideas, commitment and support from all sides.
