Pinneberg train station construction site: delays until spring 2026!
Construction work on the comprehensive modernization of Pinneberg train station began a good three years ago, and even though it is humming and tingling, one thing is now certain: completion will take longer than planned. How NDR reported, the original completion target was set for summer 2025. But given the current construction progress, rail travelers will probably have to wait until spring 2026.
The reason for the delays is not only unforeseen factors, but also the poorer building structure that was discovered when the core renovation began in May 2022. The work is continuing and additional efforts were required to make the station shine in new splendor.
Project details and progress
Fortunately, the first construction phase, which revolved around modernizing the station and building a new passenger underpass, was completed in July 2023. This first phase also saw the creation of a new, wide pedestrian tunnel, an important step for accessibility that began back in October 2018, as NAH.SH reported.
The total costs for the project are around 15 million euros. Of this, a grant amounting to 6.8 million euros will flow from Transport State Secretary Dr. Thilo Rohlfs to DB Station&Service AG. Further funds come from federal funds and Deutsche Bahn's own funds, which means that the modernization is comprehensively secured.
Barrier-free train station is being planned
The accessibility measures, which are urgently needed for all travelers, include a variety of innovations: from a tactile guidance system to elevators to all platforms to the new construction and extension of the platforms on platforms 3, 4 and 5. These structural improvements are part of an overarching plan to create barrier-free transport stations, like this BMV emphasized.
In addition, a new platform roof, which is impressively 132 meters long, will be installed, as well as new passenger information systems that will make it easier for travelers to keep an eye on their connections. Integrating such measures into the existing infrastructure is an important step, especially for the increasing number of travelers.
With around 20,000 people boarding and alighting every working day, Pinneberg train station is one of the most used train stations in Schleswig-Holstein. So there really is a lot going on! And since there is great anticipation, everyone is hoping that the next few months will continue to be used successfully to make the station fit for the future.
Overall, it is clear that modernizing the station is not only a necessity, but will also improve the quality of life for travelers. Here’s to good luck and a speedy, on-time opening!
