Helpers urgently needed for the decussation in Himmelmoor!
Hundreds of helpers will gather at Himmelmoor on Thursday, November 13th to do an important piece of conservation work. The Himmelmoor support association is calling for a big de-cussing day during which unwanted plants, especially young birch and pine trees, are to be removed. The measure is carried out in close coordination with the nature conservation authorities and is of great importance for the preservation of the special habitats in the moor.
But what exactly does “decussing” mean? Decussing is the removal of young trees that impair the light requirements of typical moor plants. Without regular maintenance, these areas would gradually develop into forests, which would be problematic for the flora and fauna typical of moorlands. A fully grown birch tree can extract an enormous 200 liters of water per day from the bog in summer, resulting in significant water loss. This underlines the necessity of the upcoming action. The work is carried out with brush cutters or chainsaws and the helpers should bring appropriate clothing and their own tools, such as pruning shears. The club's own equipment is also available.
Meeting point and procedure
The meeting will take place at the peat factory, where all volunteers should arrive at 10:00 a.m. The duration of the missions is determined by arrangement and weather conditions, and all age groups are warmly invited to get involved. After the work is done, the helpers can expect a well-deserved meal in the form of warm soup.
Not only will the Entkussel campaign help to make the moor bloom, but it will also provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about the biodiversity in this unique landscape. Removing the wood is an important step in creating clear areas that serve as refuges for various animals, including adders and smooth snakes. Some of the clippings produced are used for Benje hedges - these serve as a habitat for numerous animal species and offer them protection and food.
