In the town of Wedel, located in the Pinneberg district, there are serious plans to modernize the local swimming pool, the bathing bay. How NDR reports, the swimming pool has now been in operation for almost 20 years, and the structure and technical facilities are clearly showing their age. Due to rising operating costs reported by the operator's public utility subsidiary, the city council already budgeted funds for the upcoming modernization measures in March.
The estimate of the renovation costs is almost 15 million euros. This number caused some discussion in the summer - an online petition found over 800 supporters who spoke out against the new debt. In order to better inform the public and create transparency, the city is now organizing an information evening at which the current plans are presented.
Need for modernization of sports facilities
This problem is not isolated, as there is a significant backlog of renovation work on sports facilities and swimming pools in many cities and towns in Germany. According to information from Bundestag The responsibility for maintaining these facilities lies with the states. However, there is currently no detailed information available about the condition and need for renovation in swimming pools.
The federal government supports the states and municipalities in reducing this renovation backlog with various programs. A new law to fund €100 billion in infrastructure investment could help boost the renovation of sports venues, including swimming pools. It remains to be seen how the negotiations on the budget for 2025 and 2026 will turn out.
