Schleswig-Holstein celebrates Port Day: 140 million for the future of the ports!

The tenth took place yesterday in Lübeck German-Finnish Port Day takes place, an event that celebrates the close relations between Schleswig-Holstein and Finland. Prime Minister Daniel Günther emphasized the importance of the Port Day in order to promote exchange and deepen bilateral relations. Thanks to its strategic location, Schleswig-Holstein is a central hub for trade and tourism, with regular connections from Lübeck to over ten Finnish ports.

The topics of the port day included, among other things, port infrastructure, efficient freight transport and security in the Baltic Sea region. Günther emphasized that the security policy challenges, especially after Russia's attack on Ukraine, required closer cooperation. This is also shown by the recent accessions of Sweden and Finland to NATO.

Investments in port infrastructure

Schleswig-Holstein plans to invest heavily in its ports in the next few years. As the Time reported that 140 million euros from the special infrastructure fund are to flow into various port projects. These investments are important not only for economic purposes, but also for ensuring security of supply and the prosperity of the region.

What is particularly noteworthy is that Minister Günther is also active internationally. He is planning a delegation trip to Finland at the end of November, where he will visit companies such as Wärtsilä to discuss topics such as defense and hybrid attacks. Günther sees Finland as a role model when it comes to security strategy, especially with regard to defense preparedness in the region.

Modernizing West Coast Ports

In addition to the financial plans for the Baltic Sea coast, comprehensive modernizations are also necessary in the west coast ports. Supporters such as Economics and Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen announced that a lot would be invested in the infrastructure in Büsum, Hallig Hooge, Langeneß, Oland and Pellworm. In total, the federal government, in partnership with the state, is planning investments of up to 100 million euros.

The projects are important not only for the local economy, but also for the city's added value, which is stimulated by tourism.

Finally, Günther calls on the federal government to provide at least 400 million euros annually for the ports in order to jointly address the economic and security challenges in the Baltic Sea region. Schleswig-Holstein sees itself as an active partner in promoting a stable and secure European region.
