Schleswig-Holstein is investing 753,000 euros in energy transition research!

With a strong start to the energy transition, Schleswig-Holstein is breaking new ground and bringing a breath of fresh air to research funding. The state government has launched a new state funding fund (LEF), which has an initial funding round of 753,000 euros. As solarserver.de reports, the aim of this initiative is to actively support scientists and researchers on central questions about the energy transition.

The funding program is managed by the Society for Energy and Climate Protection Schleswig-Holstein GmbH (EKSH), which ensures that up to 100,000 euros can be made available for individual projects. Overall, practical research should be used to identify transformation paths to a climate-neutral Schleswig-Holstein by 2040.

Projects at a glance

There are exciting projects among the nine selected projects that have already been submitted by the deadline of October 1, 2025. These include the prototype development of an energy-autonomous houseboat at the HAW Kiel and the investigation into the use of recycled materials in power electronic modules. These projects show how diverse the possibilities are in the field of energy research.

Another interesting research topic is the use of salt water to produce hydrogen. With these innovative approaches, Schleswig-Holstein wants to take a further step towards a sustainable energy supply. The duration of the funded projects is a maximum of one year, so that results and solutions can be presented quickly.

Overall funding and perspectives

In addition to financial resources, the funding program also supports small and medium-sized companies and research institutions, as highlighted on wtsh.de. The total budget for the program is an impressive 27 million euros, which can be used both for innovative projects to generate renewable energy and to promote climate neutrality. The focus here is on energy storage and intelligent sector coupling, which link the areas of energy, heat, cold, mobility and industry.

The second funding call will start on February 1, 2026 and end on April 1, 2026, which offers additional perspectives for interested researchers and companies. The website of the Schleswig-Holstein state government also shows how important it is to promote the energy transition for the region and thus supports the political goal of a “Green Schleswig-Holstein”.

With all of these measures, Schleswig-Holstein is proving that it is taking the energy transition seriously and is setting the course for a sustainable future. Investments and support for research and innovation are crucial to mastering the challenges of energy supply and at the same time being ecologically and economically successful.
