Wolf spotted in Dägeling: What does this mean for the region?
Wolves seem to be on the rise in Schleswig-Holstein. There are currently heated discussions particularly around Dägeling in the Steinburg district. As NDR reports, a wolf was photographed by a wildlife camera on December 25th. Previously, videos of passers-by appeared who presumably captured the same animal. The State Office for the Environment and the wolf carers have analyzed these recordings and assume that it is actually a wolf.
The coordinator of the wolf carers, Jens Matzen, emphasizes that individual wolves are not uncommon in Schleswig-Holstein and that there are currently no known sheep attacks in the region. This ensures some relaxation among the population. Interestingly, however, there are known wolf packs in the neighboring district of Segeberg and in the Sachsenwald, which puts the situation in the Steinburg district into a broader context.
Return of the wolves
The return of wolves not only creates excitement, but also challenges in wolf management. The Wolf Information Center, which takes part in the public discourse, carries out important information and educational work to inform the population about the topic. Wolfsinfozentrum emphasizes that the state government is providing an impressive two million euros for wolf management this year in order to better deal with the emerging problems.
The latest reports show that the wolf GW1430m, responsible for some sheep deaths, has now left Schleswig-Holstein. The last such attack took place on December 29th. Thanks to wolf-proof fences, the situation in Dithmarschen has now calmed down, which initially gave worried animal owners a sigh of relief.
Protective measures and challenges
The importance of effective herd protection measures is becoming increasingly recognized. According to Schleswig-Holstein, such measures are essential to mastering the challenges of wolf management. Special collaborations with livestock farmers and hunters are intended to produce solutions that create a low-conflict co-existence between humans and wolves. The focus here is also on the provision of emergency kits and compensation payments in the event of wolf attacks.
The positive effects of the herd protection measures are already visible, as the suspension of assessments after a safety-related incident shows that the responsible authorities are taking the matter seriously and are in close communication. In addition, the EU Commission has now confirmed the requirements for herd protection on dikes, which should provide additional security for owners of farm animals.
The situation in Schleswig-Holstein and especially in the region around Dägeling remains exciting. Continuous observation by wolf carers, coupled with effective protective measures, will be crucial to how the wolves and local residents get along in the future. A good hand in education and management could promote harmonious interaction between humans and animals - there's something there!
