Bremen and EWE start large offensive for climate -neutral district heating!
Bremen, Deutschland - The cooperation between EWE and the city of Bremen takes on forms. Today, on July 2, 2025, a declaration of intent was presented, which aims more intensive cooperation in the energy and heat transition. A central point of this joint initiative is the expansion of the district heating network, which is of great importance for the development of a climate -neutral energy supply. Buten and Binnen reports that the Bremen state government also checks financially with the energy transition projects of the SWB, a subsidiary of the EWE.
In this context,is also provided for the establishment of an advisory board that is intended to facilitate coordination between Bremen and the EWE in the area of the energy transition. EWE expects an investment requirement of a whopping 3 billion euros for the projects in Bremen. The SWB currently employs around 2,300 people who work in the energy supply of the region.
heating networks as the key to the energy transition
District heating plays a key role in the heating turnaround, such as [Agora Energiewende] (https://www.agora-energiewende.de/aktuelles/starke-waermenetze-fuer-e-e-Ein-siche-klima households- and-Versorger-prooft). Forecasts show that a third of the apartments could be supplied with district heating by 2045. The rapid expansion and conversion of the heating networks is essential, while a change in the energy generation of large -scale power plants to renewable energy sources such as geothermal energy and waste heat is sought.
However, the transformation process presents the district heating suppliers with considerable challenges. High electricity prices and uncertainties regarding funding make it difficult to finance the necessary investments. According to the latest developments, the costs for district heating could increase by a third by 2045 if no adjustments to the regulatory framework are made. Therefore, experts calls for support in the form of lower electricity costs and secured conveyor frames.
Customers in the focus: Consumer protection and cost reduction
particularly affected by rising costs are 80% of the district heating educators who live in rental households with low incomes. High additional payments due to the energy crisis have put these households under pressure. In order to strengthen consumer protection, suggestions for reducing costs are under discussion, including reducing electricity tax and reforms of the network charges. The goal remains to position climate -neutral district heating as an attractive and economic alternative.
In the future, the doubles to 100,000 buildings is set as an ambitious goal by 2045. The need for a quick expansion of the heating networks is essential to ensure security of supply and at the same time to promote climate protection. In the study "Heating networks: climate -neutral, economical and affordable", which can be downloaded free of charge, the economic challenges and possible transformation paths are analyzed in detail.
