Drug drive in Hemmoor: Police catch two drivers under the influence!

On Friday, July 4, 2025, the Hemmoor police station in Lower Saxony carried out extensive traffic controls. Two men were targeted by officers because they were apparently driving under the influence of drugs. At 4:55 p.m., a 43-year-old from Hemmoor was stopped in his car on Stader Strasse. He showed clear signs of being influenced, which was confirmed by a drug test. According to police, a blood sample was then taken from him.

Almost two hours later, at 6:15 p.m., the second suspect, a 34-year-old from Cuxhaven, was noticed with his moped on Cuxhavener Straße. Signs of drug influence were also found in him and a preliminary test also indicates the consumption of narcotics. He also had to undergo a blood test to obtain more detailed information. These incidents are part of the police's ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse on the roads. As news.de reports, the focus was primarily on drug-fueled driving without driving errors, which brings additional challenges for safety on the roads.

Risks and penalties for drug use

Rapid drug tests are used to determine whether drivers may have consumed drugs. These tests check various body fluids such as saliva and urine for typical substances such as THC, cocaine and amphetamines. Be careful in traffic emphasizes that the saliva test in particular is considered reliable for determining current drug consumption. The problem remains, however, that even without any symptoms of failure, an administrative offense can occur, which can be expensive.

The possible penalties for drug use while driving vary. First offenses result in fines of 500 to 1,500 euros and a driving ban of up to three months. Parents of novice drivers also have to prepare for an extension of the probationary period by two years. Things get worse when driving errors, danger or even accidents occur due to drug use. According to Section 316 of the Criminal Code, there is a risk of imprisonment of up to one year or a fine, while Section 315c of the Criminal Code can even provide for a prison sentence of up to five years if other road users are endangered. This can quickly become expensive for those affected, as the costs for a medical-psychological examination (MPU) and other additional fees can quickly rise to over 2,000 euros, according to information from Polizeiberatung.

The police will continue to carry out increased checks to ensure safety on the roads and to curb drug abuse on the roads. The current cases from Hemmoor show how important such measures are to make the roads safer for all road users.
